Fine Arts 1 credit Mathematics* Technology Ed. Science Program Choice 2 - 4 credits Lifetime Fitness Electives 1 - 3 credits Mention the 4 credit math requirement for University of Maryland system. Program Choice and Electives are in italics so you can explain to students they are the two areas in the credit requirements that are subjective and they have different paths they can take. Program choice will be explained further on the next slide. 1 credit is equivalent to a full year course (FY) ½ credit is equivalent to a semester course (half the year)

Program Choices Advanced Technology Career & Technology Completer World Language or or 4 credits 2 credits 2 credits *Program choice must be selected on the course registration form (even for Career Tech Completers) This is new *Students can choose more than one program choice. *If students is interested in a 4 year college or university they must choose World Language (but they can still choose another if they want). * Career Academies and Career Technology Completer are interchangeable.

8 Service Learning 75 hours of service which includes planning, action, and reflection. Most HCPSS students complete service learning in middle school.

10 A Career Academy: Is an opportunity for a group of students to enroll in a specific set of courses associated with a designated career area. Is a small learning community of students who take classes together. Teaches college preparatory curriculum with a career focus. Provides hands on work experiences with employers in the community and local colleges. Give specific examples and have students turn to page 21 to look through the options.

Teacher makes course recommendation Student takes course request form home Parent reviews, signs and returns course request form School counselor reviews request form and forwards form to high school Explain the importance of including all these people in the process and decision making. Offer a time counselors are available to help students individually with planning for 8th grade.

Give examples of other schedules and discuss the typical conflicts and choices students have. In this schedule World Language is the Program Choice. Fine Arts is the elective choice.

22 GPA - Grade Point Average
GPA is a measure of a student's academic achievement. Points are earned based on letter grades. There are weighted and unweighted GPA’s. A regular class is unweighted a honors or GT/AP class is weighted. Both are reported on transcripts. GPA - Grade Point Average

Grade Regular Honors GT/AP A 4.0 4.5 5.0 B 3.0 3.5 C 2.0 2.5 D 1.0 E Give an example on the board of a GPA – Have students do the math at their desks. This is a skill HS teachers want students to know when entering 9th grade.

25 All students are expected to attend regularly in accordance with public school laws.
Any student with unlawful absences of more than 5% of the course may be considered for denial of credit.

27 Determines participation in all voluntary extracurricular activities.
Must maintain a 2.0 grade point average and no failing grades for the marking period prior to the start of the activity. All incoming 9th graders are academically eligible for fall extracurricular activities. Mention that this policy is under review. If changes are made, they will become effective on July 1 , 2012.
