Mason County Transportation Cooperative (MCTC)

Overview of Co-op  There are 4 school districts in the Co-op; Mary M Knight, Southside, Pioneer and Shelton, the host district.  There are currently 63 buses owned by the Co-op districts.  Of those, 40 are Shelton buses.

Some Statistics  We transport an average of 2,800 students per day.  Of those, 1,950 are Shelton Students.  Last year Co-op wide we traveled 782,650 miles.  Shelton’s share of that was over ½ million miles at 571,750!

More Statistics…  Besides maintaining the buses, our mechanics maintain Shelton’s fleet of vans and other vehicles including grounds equipment. This adds another 34 vehicles and numerous grounds equipment and support vehicles from the other districts.  We also do some outside work for entities such as Fire, Police, and churches.

Fuel Statistics  Last year Shelton buses used 62,000 gallons of diesel fuel for a cost of $161,000.  Shelton motor pool used 17,300 gallons of unleaded gas at a cost of $45,600.

Finance  The Total Co-op’s current operating budget is $2,975,000.  Each district pays a percent of the overhead based on the amount of miles traveled the previous year.  Shelton’s percent this year is 73%.

Funding  We receive a yearly apportionment from the state each January.  The amount is derived from a yearly Ridership report we submit the last week of October.  This year our allocation is $1,224,800.  We get no funding for any students within a radius mile of their school.

Buses  We do not use our yearly apportionment dollars to buy buses.  There is a separate fund (TVF) which is only to be used for purchasing buses.  This money comes from the State from a bus depreciation schedule.
