1 Electricity and Magnetism
Strand 5 Grade 4

2 Standards PO 1. Demonstrate that electricity flowing in circuits can produce light, heat, sound, and magnetic effects. PO 2. Construct series and parallel electric circuits. PO 3. Explain the purpose of conductors and insulators in various practical applications. PO 4. Investigate the characteristics of magnets (e.g., opposite poles attract, like poles repel, the force between two magnet poles depends on the distance between them). PO 5. State cause and effect relationships between magnets and circuitry.

3 Electricity: Effects Electricity in circuits
Magnetic power- Evidence: I saw a battery and wire change a non- magnetic bolt into an electromagnet. Electricity in circuits

4 Simple Circuits: Components
What components (materials) do we need to build a simple circuit?

5 Series Circuit

6 Parallel Circuits

7 Compare/Contrast: Series and Parallel Circuits

8 How does electricity travel?
Quick Write: What items in our homes and schools let electricity pass through them? What items or materials stop electricity?

9 Defining Conductors and Insulators
Conductors: materials that allow electricity to travel through them (easily allow the flow of electrons) Example: Insulators: materials that do NOT allow electricity to travel through them (stop the flow of electrons)

10 Conductors vs. Insulators
Water in a bathtub Steel lightning rod Plastic cup Copper wire Pennies Rubber cords Wood table Cotton ball Metal fork Books Silver locket necklace

11 Use of Insulators and Conductors
Journal (CFU): When are insulators very important in our lives? How do they protect us in the real world?

12 Magnetism All magnets have a north and south pole.
There are many examples of magnets that we use in our lives. Can you think of some other objects that are magnetic?

13 Magnetic Forces Attract: opposite poles attract or pull together.
Repel: like poles repel or push away from one another.
