Please write today’s date and glue “Spring Is” by Bobbi Katz in the next available space in your writer’s notebook. P.S. Thanks to Sophia Evangelista for this poem!

Spring is when the morning sputters like bacon and your sneakers run down the stairs Bobbi Katz took 21 lines and 45 words to tell us what spring is. Take three minutes to tell us what you think winter is. Write in sentences or wreck Katz’s poem. so fast you can hardly keep up with them, and spring is when your scrambled eggs jump off the plate and turn into a million daffodils trembling in the sunshine.

 Fragments  a sentence that is missing a subject (noun or pronoun) or a predicate (verb) or both; it is an incomplete thought  Fragments can be long  When my mother, who celebrated her birthday yesterday, decided to call the president of the company that built her car, which broke down five times in the past year.  Complete sentences can be short.  Joe speaks.

 One of the best ways to determine whether or not a bunch of words is a fragment is to NOT find a verb.  Use the verb proof to find the fragment.  I saw the cat.  In the yard.

 Three ways  and (or other coordinating conjunction)  ; . C  Ex: We had dinner it was good.  We had dinner, and it was good.  We had dinner; it was good.  We had dinner. It was good.

 Two wrongs  thin air , (comma)  Ex: Sam is here. Julian is not.  Sam is here Julian is not.  Sam is here, Julian is not.

 1. Statement?  The Psst! Test  2. Is there a verb?  I ____, you ____, he ____s  3. If there is more than one sentence, how are they joined?  and  ;

 Turn to a blank page in your writer’s notebook and number the first four lines (1-4).  Copy the following “sentences” exactly as written (one per line)  I played a soft song. On my piano. It’s hard playing piano with two hands. It gets easier you have to practice.

 Skip a line. Number the next four lines (1-4).  Fix each “sentence”.  Skip a line. Reshape the corrected sentences into a paragraph that makes sense and is aesthetically pleasing.

 I like pizza covered in fresh, green olives; fried pickles with homemade ranch dipping sauce; and fish tacos with red and green cabbage.
