What science course should I register for next year?

Are you a biology student? Most students will take IPS: Global Science, a course that focuses on the origin and evolution of Earth, stars and the universe. The course also explores climate change; past and present. As a current biology student, you may choose to take chemistry or honors chemistry next year…

IPS: Global Science Global Science explores 3 braches of science: Astronomy (Space) Geology (Earth) Atmosphere and Climate

IPS: Global Science In Astronomy we study: The size of the universe The Life Cycle of Stars The Big Bang

IPS: Global Science During Geology we will learn about: Formation and structure of Earth How do we know the age of rocks and the Earth? The movement of continents (plate tectonics)

IPS: Global Science Finally during our Atmosphere and climate unit you will study: How are climates different from each other? What causes climates in different parts of the world? In what ways are humans influencing climate and what can we do about it?

What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of matter – What makes up the universe? – What are atoms, compounds, and molecules? – How does different matter and chemicals react with each other? Chemistry is a lab course devoted to understanding the concepts and principles underlying chemical reactions.

Chemistry This course covers the following topics: – Measurement – Matter and change – Atomic structure – Naming Chemical compounds – Chemical reactions – Stoichiometry – Chemical Bonding – Solutions – Gases – Acids and bases – Nuclear chemistry – Exposure to reduction-oxidation and organic chemistry. This course may be required by some colleges and is recommended for college bound students.

Chemistry REQUIRED PREREQUISITES Science Prerequisite: Two years of science with a C or better, or sophomores with a B or better in Biology. Math Prerequisite: Completion of Geometry with a C or better (or current enrollment in Geometry with a B or better in Algebra 1 and teacher permission).

Chemistry RECOMMENDED PREREQUISITES In addition to the require prerequisites: Be Willing To Work Hard – You will have homework daily in chemistry – The assignments must be completed all the time. You can’t slide by being smart. Be comfortable with algebra equations – Chemistry like an applied math class. You will need a calculator and will be doing equations daily. Feel comfortable getting help – Because chemistry is a challenging course every student will struggle at times. – Students who are successful at chemistry come in and get help.

Honors Chemistry This class differs from regular chemistry in that the pace will be faster, advanced math skills will be assumed, and more topics will be covered. Prerequisite: Students must have achieved an A or B in Biology AND achieved an A or B in Geometry or another higher-level math course the previous year.

BENEFITS OF HONORS CHEMISTRY Challenging Course work Learning how Chemistry connects to world Shows Colleges you are a student who challenges themselves and can handle college course work. Time management Study skills for college

AP Biology Full year- 1.0 Lab Science Credit Grade Level- 11, 12 College credit awarded based on AP exam score Prerequisites: C or higher in both biology/ honors biology and chemistry/ honor’s chemistry

AP Biology College level course is equivalent to a first year Biology course in college Prepares students to take the AP exam in May.

AP Biology Covers topics learned in biology but in greater depth and applying math and statistics – Biochemistry – Genetics – Ecology – Evolution – Cellular structure & Function

AP Environmental (APES) Full year - 1.0 Lab Science Credit Grade Level - 11, 12 Prerequisite: Successful completion of two years of science This course will prepare students to take the College Board’s AP exam in May. APES is designed to be equivalent to a one semester introductory college level environmental science course.

The goal of the APES course is to provide students with opportunities to think critically about the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving or preventing them.

AP Environmental (APES) Topics include: Earth Systems and Resources The Living World Population Land and Water Use Energy Resources and Consumption Pollution Global Change

AP Physics Full year- 1.0 Lab Science Credit Grade Level- 11, 12 Prerequisite: Successful completion of, or concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2 Chemistry with a C or higher or have instructor permission.

AP Physics AP Physics is a year-long laboratory class designed for students who desire to pursue a career in engineering, medicine or numerous other fields. It is equivalent to a year-long general physics class at the university level.

AP Physics The topics covered in this class will be forces & motion, energy, electricity & magnetism, and theory of relativity. This course will prepare students to take the College Board’s AP exam in May.

Physics Full year- 1.0 Lab Science Credit Grade Level- 11, 12 Prerequisite: Successful completion of, or concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2 and successful completion of 2 year of science.

Physics Physics is a year long mathematically-based science class designed to develop problem solving, analytical thinking, and science literacy. Students who wish to pursue science related careers including engineering, architecture, computer science, all fields of medicine such as: doctors, nurses, physical therapists, sports medicine, and any other technological fields should consider physics a must.

Physics Topics studied during the year will be motion, and conservation of energy. Other possible topics include: electricity and magnetism, sound and light, relativity, and quantum physics.

Biotechnology Full Year- 1.0 Lab Science or CTE credit Tech Prep– 5 Community College Credits by earning B in class Grade Level--10, 11, 12 Prerequisites-- B or Better in Biology Completion of Chemistry or Concurrent Enrollment in Chemistry

Biotechnology is ideal for students interested in biological research, medicine and/or health care and for those would like to explore global topics in bioscience and bioethics. TOPICS DNA analysis and DNA forensics Genetic Testing Genetic Engineering Stem Cell Research Global Health & Infectious Disease Vaccine & Drug Development Bioremediation Biotechnology & the Environment Bioethics

Career Exploration through Field Trips Seattle Biomed Research on infectious global infectious disease (malaria, TB, HIV) UW Health Sciences Medicine and Research BioExpo Science Fair

Astronomy 1 Semester-.5 Lab Science Credit Grade Level--10, 11, 12 Prerequisites: Completion of 2 years of Science or concurrent enrollment in 2 nd year of science. Note: this course should be taken in combination with Geology or Ethics in Science. of science or be concurrently enrolled in their second year of science

Astronomy Astronomy is the study of our universe and its composition, structure, and processes. of science or be co ncurrently enrolled in their second year of science

Astronomy Topics include the night’s sky, Moon, gravity and light, the solar system, stars, galaxies, black holes, and the universe. This is a lab-based course, which will include some night labs and some field trips. of science or be concurrently enrolled in their second year of science
