Physical Science  A year-long hands-on course introducing concepts of Physics and Chemistry. This course is recommended for students needing additional math support prior to taking chemistry or physics. Topics include:  Motion & Forces  Energy  Structure & Properties of Matter  Chemical Reactions

Horticulture If you have an interest in gardening, then this may be the class for you! If you have an interest in gardening, then this may be the class for you!  The course is divided into 2 semesters, Horticulture 1 and Horticulture 2.  Prerequisite for Horticulture 1 is successful completion of Biology 1.  Prerequisite for Horticulture 2 is successful completion of Horticulture 1

 Horticulture 1 Topics: Horticulture careers, seeds, bulbs, plant anatomy, and plant propagation  Horticulture 2 Topics: Landscape design, maintaining gardens and greenhouses, individual learning projects If you take both Hort 1 and Hort 2 you can now receive 2.0 credit hours through JCCC.

General Chemistry The study of atoms, molecules, elements, matter, stoichiometry and much more! The study of atoms, molecules, elements, matter, stoichiometry and much more! Exciting lab experiences while discovering how chemistry effects your life everyday Exciting lab experiences while discovering how chemistry effects your life everyday Prerequisite – C or higher in Biology I. B or higher in Algebra 1, C or higher in Geometry.Prerequisite – C or higher in Biology I. B or higher in Algebra 1, C or higher in Geometry.

Honors Chemistry Moves at a faster pace and covers more topics than general chemistry Could be considered pre- AP Chemistry Chemistry is all around you. After this class you will have a much greater understanding about how the things around you work. If you are planning on taking AP Chemistry, you should take this class. Your math level is the strongest indicator of performance. Recommended math level is AAT (concurrent) or higher. Geometry/Algebra II students can be successful as well, with hard work.

Linear Motion Newton’s Laws Projectile Motion Friction and Forces on an Inclined Plane Mechanical Work and Energy Circular Motion and Gravity Momentum Simple Harmonic Motion Electrostatics Simple D.C. Circuits Waves and Sound Physics I Curriculum

Should I take Physics? Math Prerequisite: Algebra II or Advanced Algebra/Trig recommended Math Prerequisite: Algebra II or Advanced Algebra/Trig recommended At BARE MINIMUM you must know how to do the following. Solve, without any hesitation, any variable in the equation… Additionally, given any two knowns in a right triangle, you must find everything else using sin, cos, tan, or pythagorean.

Student Naturalist Come learn about animals and nature. Make animal presentations to elementary classes. If you have an interest in wildlife and the outdoors, then this might be the class for you. Prerequisite: “C” or better in General Biology

Anatomy & Physiology o A and P is the study of the structure and function of the human body through the use of dissection o Geared toward students interested in a career in health care (doctor, nursing, physical therapist, nutritionist, etc.) Prerequisites: o C or better in Biology o Chemistry recommended

What to expect in A & P….. A large amount of memorization & studying A large amount of memorization & studying College-level material College-level material Cat dissection and dissection of other organs including sheep hearts, brains, and eyes Cat dissection and dissection of other organs including sheep hearts, brains, and eyes Lab practical exams as well as written exams Lab practical exams as well as written exams

COLLEGE BIOLOGY Explore the exciting and cutting-edge fields of DNA, stem cells, human genetics, genetic engineering and biotechnology. Laboratory-based and very hands-on. Pre-requisites – C or better in Biology, Chemistry is recommended This course offers 4 credits from JCCC.

This class is for you if: You’re thinking about a science related career or You want to complete your college physical science requirement while in high school. Equivalent to the first semester of college chemistry Laboratory experiences covering both quantitative and qualitative analysis Prerequisites: C or better in general chemistry or instructor’s approval, solid math skills Optional college credit. 5 hours of college credit through JCCC. Chem 124 lecture: 4hr. Chem 125 lab: 1hr (Must be taken simultaneously.) College Chemistry

Advanced Placement Biology  This course will prepare you for the *NEW* AP Biology Exam in May.  This course is the equivalent to the Biology I and II at most colleges (meaning this is a biology major-level class)  This course integrates freshman biology with chemistry, algebra I, and statistics. (although these are not prerequisites)  This course has heavy emphasis on research methods and experimental design, which means labs (including reports) will be a large component.  If you plan on studying medicine, health, bioengineering, biotechnology, or majoring in some way in biology, this course IS FOR YOU!  You can also receive College Now credit from JCCC

AP Chemistry What is it? –Equivalent of the first two semesters of college chemistry –Great laboratory experience –Preparation for AP exam in May Prerequisites: –General Chemistry and/or College Chemistry –Algebra II and Physics are recommended If you are looking at going into a science career, this is a great place to start.

AP Chemistry—What to Expect This is a difficult class, so be prepared… –to study…a lot. –to perform many labs and write several lab reports. –to learn new problem solving skills. –to take at least one mock AP exam. –to take the AP exam in May if you want college credit. –to be challenged and have fun doing it. –to leave this class better prepared for college.

AP Honors Physics I This is an introductory level, honors physics course that is equivalent to a college physics 1 at any university. It is also worth JCCC credit. Although this is not a Calculus-based Physics course, problem-solving mathematics will be highly integrated into the curriculum. This course is comparable to Physics I. The AP Physics exam is accepted worldwide. If you are going in-state and your major is not directly related to Physics, this class may not be for you.

AP Honors Physics II AP Physics I is a pre-requisite This is an introductory level, honors physics course that is equivalent to a college physics 2 at any university. Although this is not a Calculus-based Physics course, mathematics will be highly integrated into the curriculum. This course is comparable to Physics II. The AP Physics exam is accepted worldwide. If you are going in-state and your major is not directly related to Physics, this class may not be for you.

Materials Science & Engineering This is a one semester class offered in the Aerospace & Engineering department that is open to all students at ONW. What is it? Explores solid materials (metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites) Exposes students to the Engineering Design Cycle Involves hands-on projects: i.e. dissecting a common consumer product, a crystal growing competition, and concrete beam competition Prerequisites: Must have completed chemistry with a “B” or higher grade

Genetics and Biotechnology I &II ** Both classes will utilize a hands-on experience with laboratory techniques used in most clinical and laboratory facilities. Genetics and Biotechnology 1 Topics: Patterns of human inheritance, chromosomal abnormalities, bioethics, human genetic disorders, and visiting clinical and research facilities. Genetics and Biotechnology 2 Topics: Human embryological development, uses of mitochondrial DNA, the Human Genome Project, gene therapy, as well as a student mentorship.

Genetics and Biotechnology I &II Study the molecular background of human genetics and inheritance. The course is divided into 2 semesters, Genetics1 and Genetics 2. *each ½ credit It counts as a LIFE SCIENCE credit. Prerequisites:Prerequisites: General Chemistry (recommended) and Biology IGeneral Chemistry (recommended) and Biology I
