2 Take Biotechnology! Hands-on lab experience Perform experiments that are done in actual Biotech Labs: – Creating DNA Gels – Using restriction enzymes to cut DNA – Insert genes from one organism to another! – Test food to see if it is genetically modified – AND SO MUCH MORE!!! CTE or Lab Science Credit Gain career experience in a growing job field

3 Environmental System Design Learn about local environmental issues – – population growth – land use – agriculture, – water pollution – energy resources Study ecology (interrelationship between organisms and their environment) Group projects: – planning a school – growing plants – maintaining a worm bin – debating dam removal – planning salmon recovery – designing wind turbines Labs and field studies Guest speakers, field trips Class participation expected, some reading and homework, graphing analysis, presentations 11 th or 12 th grade Mrs. Walters

4 Chemistry Chemistry is the study of the interaction of atoms in our world.

5 Chemistry This course will help you obtain the background needed for: Advanced Placement or College Chemistry courses. Understanding chemical concepts in other fields of study. Gaining a greater appreciation of the world around you! You will participate in classroom discussion, algebra based problem solving, inquiry and laboratory experiments.

7 AP Chemistry  AP Chemists:  Study properties of materials & the changes materials undergo  See how chemical principles operate in all aspects of our lives  Participate in a flipped classroom learning environment  Do inquiry & traditional labs  Do demonstrations to teach peers about aspects of chemistry  Work collaboratively  College credit available  Save as much as thousands in college!  A student who scores a 5 on the AP chemistry exam earns 15 credits of chemistry at University of Washington!!  This is class is extremely rigorous but rewarding!  The keys to success is to have an exceptional work ethic (yes there is a heavy work load) and access peers/teachers/resources for help!

8 AP Biology is a fun and challenging course! Develop a deep understanding of modern biology Learn practices in science (aka lab skillz). Apply biological knowledge and critical thinking to environmental and social concerns. The course conforms to the standards of the College Board. This is a college-level course, and you will be held to high expectations and mature responsibilities just like a college freshman taking Introduction to Biology. Depending on how you score on the AP Biology exam given every May, you may be able to earn college credit! We will study biochemistry, cell structure and function, metabolism, genetics, biotechnology, evolution, animal physiology, and ecology. And we will do lots of LABS! Yes, there is a heavy workload. What challenging classes can avoid this? Are you up to the challenge?

12 Active Physics A physics first or 9 th grade curriculum. Use the same book you used in middle school and as a Freshman. Short and quick labs. Reports are required at the end of chapters (chapter challenge). Lots of in-class discussion, readings and quizzes.

13 AP Physics New format. Less emphasis on math and formula use and more on understanding and application. A whole year dedicated to Mechanics, how and why things move. Slower in pace from previous years, more time for labs and to really understand the science. More time will also give us time to include in- class competitions.

15 AP Economics Microeconomics (next year). Year following: (2015-16) Macroeconomics will be taught. Microeconomics focuses on how a company and the individual can prosper in a market (the U.S.) economy (NEW) CTE and Social Studies credit available. Some math & graphing, but its really, really easy. Unlike some social studies, there is not a big emphasis on memorization. Focus is more on a system approach and critical thinking. Focus is on class activities and away from lecture.
