Energy Sources By Alex Venslauskas

What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work. Energy makes everything happen and can be divided into two types and the two types are: Stored energy is called potential energy Moving energy is called kinetic energy. The six forms of energy are: Chemical energy Electrical energy Thermal energy Radiant Energy Medical Energy Nuclear Energy

Non-renewable Energy sources The non-renewable energy sources are: Oil Natural Gas Coal Uranium The Disadvanges of Fossil Fuels are that Fossil Fuels are not renewable. Once they are gone they re gone forever. The percentage of non- renewable energy consumed is 93%.

Renewable energy sources The renewable energy sources are: Biomass Wind Solar Hydropower Geothermal The percentage of renewable energy consumed is 7%. I think renewable energy sources are important because we won’t always have non-renewable energy sources forever.

Geothermal Energy Geo Means earth and thermal means heat and geothermal means Earth-Heat. Today, people use the geothermal heated hot water directly in swimming pools and health spas. 1.Holes are drilled into the ground 2.Pipes are lowered into the hot water. 3. The hot water or steam comes up from the pipe and goes to the turbine 4. The turbine blades spin this Mechanical energy is connected to a generator to make electricity 5. The electricity goes to the transmission wires that deliver electricity to towns.

Hydro Power Hydro means water and Hydroelectric means making electricity from water. Ten percent of electricity in the U.S. is from Hydro-electricity. In the past Hydropower was used to turn the wooden wheels that are attached to grinding wheels to produce corn or flour.

Solar Power The sun is our nearest star. The sun or other stars are responsible for all of our energy. By 1920 tens of thousands of people used solar to heat water. We then discovered deposits of oil and natural gas. Solar water heaters are making a comeback. The bad thing about solar power is that it only works when the sun is shining. The solar water heaters were first developed in the 1950s for use on U.S. space satellites.

Wind Energy Wind can be used to do work. Here are three examples: When a boat lifts its sail To pump water from wells Windmills have been used for centuries to pump water. These are in order in which they come: 1.Blowing wind spins the blades on the turbine. 2.Blades on the turbine are connected to a turning shaft and a gear transmission. 3.A high speed shaft spins a generator to produce electricity. 4.The electricity goes to the transmission wires that deliver electricity to towns
