2 A. In medieval Europe, life revolved around the Catholic Church. 1. Priests conducted religious services, ran schools, and hospitals, performed weddings and conducted burials, and recorded birth, or Church rituals. 2. Monks lived in religious communities called monasteries. 3. Women entered convents and became nuns between 1000 and 1200. a. Hildegard of Bingen was a famous nun who wrote music for the church.

3 B. Saints were holy men and women who had died. 1. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was the most honored Saint.

4  C. The Catholic Church tried to end heresy, or religious beliefs that conflict with Church teaching, but establishing a court called the Inquisition. › 1. People brought were urged to Confess. If they did, they would be punished and returned to the Church, if not, they were tortured until they confessed or were executed.

5 D. Leaders of the Catholic Church persecuted Jews. 1. They blamed Jews for economic problems. 2. Hatred for Jews is called anti-Semitism. 3. Many Jews in western Europe lost rights and were forced to move to Poland and other Eastern European countries.

9 B. Oxford University was one of the first universities established in Europe. 1. Students studied grammar, logic, arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy for four to six years. 2. College graduates could continue to get their doctorate in law, medicine, or theology-the study of religion and God. Thomas Aquinas came up with scholasticism where he combined church teachings and ideas of Aristotle. Studied the idea of natural law- the belief that some laws are part of human nature.

10  C. Latin was the language of educated people in Europe. › 1. Everyday languages were the venacular of the local people.  D. Vernacular literature began in the Middle Ages. › 1. Troubadour poetry and the heroic epic, two types of vernacular literature, became popular in the educated class. › 2. The Song of Roland is about a knight named Roland who fights against the Muslims.

12 A. A plague is a disease that spreads quickly and kills many people. 1. The Black Death was a Plague that spread throughout Europe and Asia in the late Middle Ages. 2. Historians believe the Mongols were partly to blame because of open trade between China, India, the Middle East, and Europe. A. Rats carrying the plague were brought in on trading caravans.

13  C. The first outbreak appeared in China, then India, Muslim countries, and Europe. › The European outbreak began in Caffa, a city on the Black Sea.  D. About 38 million Europeans died of the Black Death between 1347 and 1351. › 1. The deaths of so many people damaged the economy and weakened feudalism.

14  A. Began after Edward III angered French by declaring himself king of France in 1337.  B. French defeated the English in 1453.  C. Joan of Arc, was a peasant girl who fought in the French army. › She was captured and burned at the stake in 1431 during the Inquisition.

15 D. After a Civil war in England, called the War of the Roses, Henry Tudor was crowned Henry VII. E. Muslims ruled most of Spain and Portugal, although most of the people were Christians and Jews. › The Reconquista was the Christians’ struggle to retake Spain and Portugal. › Princess Isabella and Ferdinand married and united the two territories. They also worked to expel the Muslims and make all of Spain Catholic.
