7 Collected Poetry: Accompanying Annotations Example “Do not go gentle into that good night” was written as a Villanelle by Welsh writer Dylan Thomas in 1947 for his father. Thomas uses repetition while confronting the theme of death and dying. Thomas was influenced to write this poem while staying with his family. His father’s health was failing at the time, but he managed to live almost five years after it was written. The poem is not titled, but known by its first line.
