3 What is Nutrition?  Nutrition:  “the process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth.”

4 Why is it important to eat healthy?  Your body needs healthy fuel to operate just like a car  Eating healthy shapes the way you act during the day (ex. more energy)  To prevent future diseases  Obesity, Diabetes, etc.

5 Important Nutrients  Carbohydrates  Fats  Proteins  Vitamins  Minerals  Water

6 Carbohydrates  Main source of energy  About 60 % of our diet

8 Fats  Our body’s second source of energy  About 30% of our diet  What do fats do?  Provide insulation  Protect muscles & bones  Stores energy

9 Protein  Protein builds, maintains, and replaces the tissues in your body.  About 10% of our diet

10 Vitamins  Helps with the process of releasing energy in foods  Assists in growth

11 Vitamin A

12 Vitamin B  B Vitamins are essential for bodily functions  Energy Production  Making Red Blood cells

13 Vitamin C  Promotes a healthy immune system  Other functions:  antioxidant activity  collagen synthesis  the cardiovascular system  the immune system

14 Vitamin D  Good for healthy bones  Helps the body hold in Calcium  We can obtain Vitamin D from sunlight

15 Minerals  The body needs minerals to survive and carry out daily functions and processes.

16 Water  Water is a significant aspect of our bodily functions 1. Cell Life 2. Chemical & Metabolic Reactions 3. Transport of Nutrients 4. Body Temperature Regulation 5. Elimination of Waste

22 Why it matters?  As Americans, our society is very much overweight.  We need to eat healthy and exercise in order to live long healthy lives.
