1 Language Arts: Our theme for the week is ”My Family and Me”. The children will share stories about themselves and their family, and what makes them unique. The high frequency word for the week is: we. We will also review I and can. Our “Wonderful Words” for discussion the week are together, imitate, protect, and resemble. The students will continue journal writing using pictures, words, and/or inventive spelling. Math: Our focus continues to be the calendar and its concepts. We will practice writing the date, and we will explore manipulatives. In unit one we will focus on numbers to 10 and the counting sequence to 20. Students will use manipulatives as tools for math. They will represent a number of objects with a written numeral. Students will use one-to-one correspondence as they count objects, and they will make comparisons of different sets of objects by using greater than, less than, and equal to. Announcements: CORRECTION IN LAST WEEK’S MEMO! The OPEN HOUSE date was incorrectly listed. THE DATE OF OPEN HOUSE IS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 th, 2014. Scheduled times are listed below: 6:00-6:20 PTA Meeting in the Gym 6:25-6:55 Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 3 rd Grade 7:00-7:30 1 st and 2 nd Grades 6:00-7:30 Book Fair will be open in the library during Open House. ** BOOK FAIR : Book Fair is scheduled for the week of September 15-19 th. Ms. Lebas is in need of volunteers, so please send a note if you can help out during this time. Our class will have the opportunity to shop during our normal Library time scheduled for THURSDAY 12:25-1:05. Book Fair will also be open during MES Open House. Mrs. Lebas will be collecting NEW Pajamas for needy children during the book fair week. **Grandparent’s Day: We invite all KINDERGARTEN GRANDPARENTS for a special adult to attend our MES Grandparents’ Day celebration on Tuesday, September 9th. See the following schedule for the appropriate times: 1:15-2:00 Cascio and Krogsgard’s Classes 2:15-3:00 Bourg, Jones, Turner and Wetekamm’s Classes Please remind grandparents of the following: -- PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY to avoid long check in line at the front desk or on the side of the gym. -- They must have their ID to check in. -- They will have the opportunity to join the PTA for $6.00, which includes a keepsake photo. ** THE MES CAFETERIA WILL BE OPEN to parents beginning SEPTEMBER 15th. Our Kindergarteners eat lunch from 10:50-11:15. In order to eat lunch with your child, you will need to check in at the front office, and then wait at the lunch room door for your student. The children then go out to recess on the playground from 11:15-11:35. For safety purposes, please note that parents are not allowed on the playground during this time. Reminders: ** Please check your child’s folder EVERYDAY. Let your child watch you, help you, and learn from you! ** Please send a snack or snack money every day. Snacks are 75 cents. ** The classrooms do get cold, so you may want to send a small sweater for during the day, as well as a small blanket for rest time. READING: ** Reading to your child NIGHTLY is the most effective homework you can do to foster literacy development. ** Use the BOOKWORM to log books read. Send in when completed for a treat! ** Read to your child nightly and have them retell the story to you. WRITING IDEAS: Tuesday: Practice writing your name 5 times. Wednesday: Draw a picture of your family doing something you love to do. Thursday: Try to label 3 items in your family picture from yesterday. (sun, me, mom, dad) MATH IDEAS: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday -Practice counting and writing numbers 1-10. Practice personal information : name and birthday.
