2 Selecting Personnel The first step in the process of hiring a new employee is that the managers must establish that they actually need a new employee. After they identify the need, they work with human resource specialists

3 Establishing A Need The need for hiring is normally due to an employee leaving the job, retired, or a promotion. Managers team up with human resource specialist to help with the hiring process. job descriptionA company uses a job description (a list of the basic tasks that make up a job) for each position in the company.

4 Cont. Job specification-Job specification- is a list of the qualifications a worker needs to do that job. The job specification also used to help identify the qualifications and skills of the new employee.

5 Recruiting Applicants The Human resource department will identify the qualified applicants for the job position. Current Employees Current employees will be notified about the opening and will have the first opportunity to apply. The new job may fit a current employee better.

6 Cont. Unsolicited Applicants Larger companies take applications daily even if there is no jobs available. They hold the applications until six months and if there is an opening they review them.

7 Cont. Employment Agencies These business mostly helps the people prepare for the job, they also recruit and evaluate. Other Sources Colleges, high schools, and other educational preferences help graduates obtain jobs.

8 Processing Applications Step 1: Human resources review the applications to eliminate the people that don’t meet the minimum qualifications. Step 2: A human resources employee interviews the remaining applicants. Step 3: The human recourses employee checks the information during the interview for accuracy.

9 Cont. Step 4: Human resources employees give tests out to the remaining applicants in the pool. Step 5: The manager or work team of the department interviews the top applicants. Step 6: The applicant’s information is compared with job requirements. Step 7: Human resources hires the employee.

10 Promoting, Transferring and Releasing Employees A Promotion- the advancement of an employee within a company to a higher position. Transfer- the assignment of an employee to another job in the company. Discharge- the release of an employee from the company. Layoff- a temporary or permanent reduction in the number of employees because of a change in business conditions.

11 Employee Turnover A. Employee turnover- the rate at which people enter and leave employment in a business in a business during a year. –# of employee who have terminated employment with the business/ the average number of employees = % of employee turnover. –# of employee hired to replace employees who have terminated employment with the business/ the average # of employee turnover.

12 Cont. Exit Interviews –Exit interview- a formal interview with an employee who is leaving the company to determine his or her attitudes about the company and suggestions for improvements.
