Hardware Introducing the Components of a Computer

CPU (Central Processing Unit) The CPU is the brains of the computer. It is the primary component of a computer that processes instructions. The CPU runs the operating system and applications and is constantly receiving input from the user or active software. It processes the data and produces output, which may stored by an application or displayed on the screen.

Motherboard A motherboard is one of the most essential parts of a computer system. It holds together many of the crucial components of a computer, including the CPU, memory and connectors for input and output devices.

RAM (Random Access Memory) A type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly (this means that any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes). RAM is the most common type of memory found in computers and other devices, such as printers. RAM can be both written to and read from.

ROM (Read Only Memory) ROM is "built-in" computer memory containing data that normally can only be read, not written to. ROM contains the programming that allows your computer to be "booted up" or regenerated each time you turn it on. Unlike a computer's RAM the data in ROM is not lost when the computer power is turned off. The ROM is sustained by a small long-life battery in your computer.

Graphics Card The Graphics card is a circuit board (this is a small piece of electronic equipment) inside a computer that allows it to receive and show pictures and video. There are lots of different types of graphics cards, choosing which one you have will depend upon what you want to use it for

Hard Disk The Hard Disk is a magnetic disk on which you can store computer data. When you save data or install programs on your computer, the information is generally written to your hard disk. A hard disk can store anywhere from 10 to more than 100 GB. The hard disk is a spindle of magnetic disks, called platters, that record and store information. Because the data is stored magnetically, information recorded to the hard disk remains intact after you turn your computer off.
