2 When did Filipino Immigrants first come to the United States?
The first wave of Filipino immigrants came around 1763 when the Spanish war started to endanger the Philippines.

3 When did immigration from the Philippines reach its peak?
The population of immigrants reached its peak in 2004 when the numbers rose to 1,413,200 Filipinos in the United States.

4 Why were they coming? What were they looking for here?
They came for more job opportunities and to escape their crowding population.

5 Has America Welcomed Them of Rejected them? Why?
The Tydings-McDuffie act of 1934 limited Filipinos to 50 people per year. White Americans claimed that they were taking the minimum wage jobs and stealing the women.

6 How did they travel to America? Where did they enter upon arrival?
They came on boats and ships. They mostly all landed and entered in the Western US at Angel Island, but some landed in the Gulf of Mexico.

7 Where have they chosen to settle?
They chose to live on the Western coast of the US. Almost all of them lived in California.

8 What social, linguistic, economic and cultural hardships have Filipinos faced?
Filipinos faced racism frequently. They were not allowed to swim in white pools nor stay in hotels. Most white Americans blamed them for taking the women and the jobs. They were very poor and made minimum wage. Filipino kids were usually not accepted at American schools. Many of the Filipinos were very intelligent and made better grades then the white kids.

9 Is there a job or jobs that many members of this group typically perform in the United States? Why?
The Filipino’s often open up restaurants or shops for merchandise.

10 What kinds of laws have governed their migration, work and citizenship opportunities, and how have these laws changed over time? Back in the 1900’s, laws were strict about immigration. The Filipino's took many jobs from Americans. The government made laws that limited their jobs and slowed Filipino immigration into America.

11 Have many of these immigrants sought to become citizens
Have many of these immigrants sought to become citizens? When were they given the opportunity to do so? Many Filipino’s came to America to stay. The government allowed them to stay and gave them a citizenship.

12 Are large numbers of this group still emigrating to the U. S
Are large numbers of this group still emigrating to the U.S.? Why or why not? Yes. They are coming because their country is getting very crowded. The Filipino American population is the fastest growing Asian group in America.
