2. Origin Origins A. 610 CE, Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the Angel Gabriel appeared to Muhammad, a merchant, and delivered the one true word of God. B. 622, Muhammad flees to Medina to avoid persecution, this is the start of the Muslim calendar C. Muhammad is seen as the last, and greatest, of God’s messengers.

3. Beliefs. Monotheistic i. Believes in many of the same prophets as Judaism and Christianity. ii. Believe Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus were all prophets iii. Believe all prophets are equal, and that Muhammad was the last prophet.

4. Holy Book Qur’an i. Written 30 years after Muhammad’s death ii. Similar background as Christian Bible, but follows Ishmael iii. Muslims believe it contains the literal word of God, as revealed to Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel over the course of 20 years

5. Ka’ba (Located in Mecca) i. Most sacred site in Islam ii. Said to have been built by Abraham and his son Ishmael iii. Muslim face this way when praying

7. Sects A. The 2 major sects: Sunni and Shi’a, developed shortly after the death of Muhammad and centered around who should lead Islam after his death. B. Sunni i. Followed Abu Bakr ii. Largest sect C. Shi’a i. Followed Ali

8. Holidays Ramadan i. 9 th month of the Muslim calendar ii. Period of fasting and Atonement iii. Represents the time when the Qur’an was sent down to the people.
