2 The Hong Kong Budding Poets Award 2009/10 An annual event since 2005 To develop students’ high-order thinking skills and creativity To enhance students’ awareness and appreciation of poetry To provide students an opportunity to strive for excellence in the use of language and literature

3 Eligibility Primary Section (All primary schools) Secondary Section (All secondary schools) Open Section (All including international and ESF schools) All entries must be nominated by schools. Each school can nominate at most 20 entries, choosing any of the three sections The Hong Kong Budding Poets Award 2009/10

4 Primary Section Secondary Section Open Section Length (minimum) 12 lines16 lines20 lines Poetic form Poetic form is open but should exhibit rhyme, rhythm, imagery and structure. Poetic form is open but should exhibit rhyme, rhythm, imagery and structure, in addition, the use of poetic devices such as alliteration, simile and metaphor. 7 Students can enter poems on any specified themes by the organiser and in any shape they like. Each poem must be given a title. All poems are judged anonymously and the name of the author must not appear on the manuscript. The Hong Kong Budding Poets Award 2009/10

8 Poems must not have been previously published, self-published or published on a website or broadcast before 1 June 2009. Poems must be the original work of the author. Any infringement of competition rules and regulations will disqualify the student from taking part in the competition or winning an award. The Hong Kong Budding Poets Award 2009/10

9 Student Entry Form Have the contestants give a title to their entries Never include school name or student name on the Student Entry Form Have the poems typed and printed in 14-pt Times New Roman Assign a number to each entry form in sequence, e.g. 1, 2, 3… Save all soft copies on to a disc The Hong Kong Budding Poets Award 2009/10
