1 NATA Foundation Deloss Brubaker, EdD, ATC Undergraduate Student Writing Contest (USWC) Process The NATA/NATA Foundation Undergraduate Student Writing Contest (USWC) is named for Deloss Brubaker, who chaired the contest for its first 30 years. The USWC is now in its 36 th year. Through this competition, a total of $1,000 is awarded in 3 different contest divisions: Original Research ($500) Literature Review ($250) Case Study ($250) The contest is funded by the NATA. The NATA/NATA Foundation Undergraduate Student Writing Contest (USWC) is named for Deloss Brubaker, who chaired the contest for its first 30 years. The USWC is now in its 36 th year. Introduction All students must be NATA members in order to submit to the contest. Students must be undergraduate students at the time of submission. Students (both primary, as well as all secondary, authors) must be enrolled in a CAATE accredited undergraduate athletic training program. Athletic training program director (ATPD) and/or an athletic training faculty member must be aware of the student conducting this research and submitting it to the USWC. All students must be NATA members in order to submit to the contest. Students must be undergraduate students at the time of submission. Students (both primary, as well as all secondary, authors) must be enrolled in a CAATE accredited undergraduate athletic training program. 2 Contest Requirements The ATPD or faculty member must approve of this submission to USWC. Only undergraduate students may be authors of the submission; college/university faculty members are not permitted to be authors, nor may they receive the monetary award. Student(s) may submit to only one of the contest divisions per year. Students can only submit one manuscript per research project. No more than six authors are allowed on one manuscript submission. The ATPD or faculty member must approve of this submission to USWC. USWC Chair answers emails via contest exclusive email address, LLDewald@gmail.com, & telephone calls about contest throughout year. LLDewald@gmail.com USWC rules must be maintained or updated as necessary throughout year. 4 March 1 Submission due date for USWC for both electronic file & also the 3 paper copies. If March 1 st is on a Saturday or Sunday, then submission due date is Friday at close of business (5:00 pm CT) as noted in advertisements. USWC Chair creates an Excel spreadsheet with contest, student name, university affiliation, title of paper, student’s telephone number, athletic training program director’s name & telephone number, and score columns for each reviewer’s scores on the paper. Each student receives an email from USWC Chair confirming receipt of their electronic file for contest & if it has passed the mechanical review. not considered Upon submission, USWC Chair conducts a mechanical review using established mechanical review forms to ensure guidelines have been followed by author(s). If there are errors in adhering to submission guidelines, USWC Chair returns submission to student advising as to what was not done correctly. 24 hours is allowed for resubmission of a corrected version. Sometimes an area is not actually plagiarism, while other times it is gross plagiarism. These papers that have grossly plagiarized are dismissed from further consideration in the contest. Reviewers have 1 month to complete reviews & return evaluation forms to USWC Chair. Reviewers do not grade paper with track changes, only the review rubric is used. 7 7 NATA Foundation Deloss Brubaker, EdD, ATC Undergraduate Student Writing Contest (USWC) Process Timeline May 15 USWC Chair receives evaluation rubric forms from reviewers and collates the evaluation rubric forms & scores. USWC Chair enters scores into Excel spreadsheet & tallies scores. The score totals are rank ordered for each of the 3 contests. Winning papers must score 90 points or > on 100 point scoring system scale. No awards are given to papers scored <90 points on scoring system scale. If there is a tie or if papers are within 1 point of each other, USWC Chair then asks reviewers to re-grade just those papers. If a tie continues to exist, USWC Chair then send papers to different reviewers from one of other contest sub- committees & has them grade the tied papers. Students are also informed about NATA Foundation Pinky Newell Student Leadership & Scholarship Breakfast. Athletic training program director is also called & informed that his/her student won the specified contest. The ATPDs are also informed about NATA Foundation Pinky Newell Student Leadership & Scholarship Breakfast. USWC Chair notifies NATA Foundation Director of winning students’ names & their papers’ title. Student winners receive a plague & a monetary check, which are handled by NATA Foundation. The NATA Foundation also communicates with award recipients about the NATA Foundation Pinky Newell Student Leadership & Scholarship Breakfast. 9 NATA Annual Meeting Students receive their awards & checks at NATA Foundation Pinky Newell Student Leadership & Scholarship Breakfast. USWC Committee Chair & sub-committee members each receive a free breakfast ticket, held for them at breakfast “will call” area. Either Deloss Brubaker, the USWC Chair, or someone from the USWC Committee announces winners at the breakfast & has a photograph taken with each winner. Contest is officially over for the current year & the next contest begins.
