6 6 Primary SectionFull-time students from primary schools which adopt the local primary curriculum Secondary Section Full-time students from secondary schools which adopt the local secondary curriculum Open Section All of the above + full-time students from schools which do NOT adopt the local curriculum, e.g. international and ESF schools All entries must be nominated by schools Each school can nominate at most 20 entries, choosing any of the three sections Eligibility

7 7 Basic Rules Primary SectionSecondary and Open Sections Poetic Form Poetic form is open but should exhibit rhyme, rhythm, imagery and structure. Poetic form is open but should exhibit rhyme, rhythm, imagery and structure, in addition, the use of poetic devices such as alliteration, simile and metaphor. Length (Revised) Nil. Students should decide on the most appropriate length to express the theme of their entries.

8 8 All poems are judged anonymously and the name of the author must not appear in the entries. Poems must not have been previously published, self-published or published on a website or broadcast before 1 June 2012. Poems must be the original work of the author. Any infringement of competition rules and regulations will disqualify the student from taking part in the competition or winning an award. Basic Rules

12 Online School Application & Entry Submission (New) Online School Application (For schools to join the Award) Student Zone (For students to compose entries) Teacher Zone (For Teachers-in-charge to submit final entries to EDB) Online Adjudication (For Judges’ use only) Before teachers submit students’ entries to EDB, they may view, comment (optional), and/or return the entries to students for their edition.

13 13 Online School Application & Entry Submission (New) Teacher-in-charge is strongly advised to familiarise yourself thoroughly of the whole online system before you use it. a. At “Home” Zone, read the flow chart to understand the whole setting of the system b. At “Online School Application” Zone, read “Notes to Teachers-in-charge” and register your school via this system c. At “Teacher Zone”, read “Notes to Teachers-in-charge” and create students’ accounts. You may view, comment (optional), return and/or submit students’ entries to EDB via this Zone d. At “Student Zone”, read “Notes to students” so you could guide students in case they have difficulty using this system to compose entries e. For step-wise instructions, please read “How to Use/Online School Application” “How to Use/Teacher Zone” “How to Use/Student Zone” f. Please ask your students to read “Student Zone/Notes to Students” before they use the “Student Zone” to compose entries.

15 Reminder to Teachers-in-charge Teachers are required to provide a valid email account and check this account frequently for the updates of the Award. A confirmation/notification email will be sent to the teacher when the teacher completes Part 1 and Part 2 online school application students submit/re-submit entries to teacher the teacher submit an entry to EDB

21 21 Improvised Writing & Interview to demonstrate students’ talents in creative writing & and the originality of their submitted entries. The nominees will write a stanza on a given topic. The Best Improviser of the Year Award (for the outstanding author(s) whose improvised entry demonstrates a high standard overall) Individual interview: nominees share their views on their previously submitted poems via online system

30 30 Workshops for Teachers Introductory - 5 Dec 2011 (Monday) Advanced - 6 Dec 2011 (Tuesday) Objectives: a) enable teachers to include poetry in the language curriculum and/or programmes with strategies to stimulate students’ imagination and language sensitivity b) explore the techniques to guide students to write and improve their writing according to abilities Presenter: Prof. Shirley Geok-lin Lim, English Department of the University of California, Santa Barbara (Online registration is available on BPA website now)

31 Deadline for Online Entry Submission 7 Feb 2012 Teacher-in-charge is required to submit students’ entries to the Education Bureau on or before 7 February 2012. Teacher may change choice of entry on or before the above deadline by unchecking/checking the “Submit to EDB” button at “Teacher Zone/ Students’ Poems”. However, no amendment could be made after the deadline. The system will identify and record the last submission before the deadline as the final entry/entries for each school. A confirmation email will be sent to the TIC upon each entry submission to EDB. Please save your Final record of submission for your own reference.

It is part of the competition process and those who do not attend will be regarded as not wishing to go on with the competition. Please remind the relevant students to reserve time. 36 36 Entry 1 Theme: Food Salt, mustard, vinegar, pepper, French almond rock.. Bread and butter for your supper, That’s all mother’s got. Fish and chips and coca-cola, Put them in a pan, Irish stew and ice-cream soda, We’ll eat all we can.

38 38 What’s the problem with Entry 1? Ans: Lack originality/plagiarism. This poem has been published. Student probably has just downloaded it from the internet and made slight amendment.

39 39 What’s the problem with Entry 2? Ans: Originality. This poem is a mere reproduction of a classic fairy tale in a poetic form. Remarks for Teachers: Teachers are advised to guide students to be more creative and to produce original entry, e.g. by changing the characters or the ending of the fairy tale.

40 40 What are the problems with Entry 3? Ans: Student’s name and class are shown on the entry. This violates BPA’s rule: “All poems are judged anonymously and the name of the author must not appear on the manuscript/student entry form”.
