1 Do Now: What happened to the dinosaurs? Why is this important? Is it important? Should scientists spend time researching why they died out?

2 Homework due today Read pages 4 through 9 Write down the terms in bold and then answer them in your notebooks for next class. Open your notebooks and show me the defined terms.

3 Homework For Friday – Be able to explain the difference between control group and an experimental group when doing a lab / experiment. The steps of the Scientific Method. Be able to explain each step and why it is important. Read pages 10- 12

4 New material – from the reading Why is Biology important? We can now cure many diseases that were thought impossible years ago such as Polio. Each new discovery creates new issues. For example – Why do we have nerve endings that feel pain?

5 To think about What would life be without pain? Would you like to live without pain, ever? What issues would be raised?

6 New material – from the reading With each new generation and increase in population society has new outbreaks that develop. Science creates theories not guarantees For example- Duckbilled Platypus - mammals give live birth, warm blooded,… Not the Duckbilled Platypus - it lays eggs, but still a mammal.

7 New material – from the reading Steps of the Scientific Method Scientific Method –Observe –Inference Hypothesis –Experiment –Data Collection –Interpretation –Conclusion (potential to repeat experiment) why?

8 New material – from the reading Two soil pots (open to page 6 & 7 One is the control (never altered) One is typical but we somehow alter it – over fertilize it. This is the Independent variable (the adding or extra fertilizer).
