2 What Is Nutrition? Nutrition - Nutrition is the study of how our bodies use the food we eat to keep us healthy. Nutrients - The substances in food that promote normal growth, maintenance, and repair in your body are called nutrients. (Holt, Rinehart and Winston)

3 The Nutrients We Need Carbohydrates – sugar or starches found in candy and bread - give energy Proteins – build muscles - found in meats Fats - nutrients that store energy and some vitamins – oil/butter Vitamins - organic compounds in fruits/veggies – needed for good health Minerals – iron, calcium, sodium in vegetables– for strong bone, teeth, hair Water- transport food and nutrients, wash away waste products, regulate your body temperature

5 The following guidelines may be used toward better nutrition. No guidelines can guarantee health or well-being, but they may give you the start you need. Eat a variety of foods. Maintain healthy weight. Avoid too much saturated fat and cholesterol. Eat foods with adequate starch and fiber.

6 The Nutrition Facts Label The Nutrition Facts label is a label found on the outside packages of food and states: 1. the number of servings in the container. 2. the number of Calories in each serving. 3. the quantity of nutrients in each serving. (Holt, Rinehart and Winston)
