3 Leadership – CRM (Crew Resource Management) Apropharma ® - Leadership In the aviation industry, the prime concern is safety On a multi-crew aircraft, the prime objective of CRM is for each crew member to be part of an effective team The Airline Captain is the manager of that team CRM recognises and reinforces the legitimate authority of the Captain

4 Leadership vs Authority Apropharma ® - Leadership Leadership Involves teamwork, and the quality of a leader depends on the succes of the leader’s relationship with the team. Leadership skills needs to be developed, it is an acquired skill through proper training. Authority Is assigned by the company. The given command of the Captain should be adequately balanced by assertiveness and crew member participation. If a situation requires, decisive actions are expected.

With a vision in mind, you are more likely to succeed, ex. safe flight Mapping a path to your objectives and your team What is the vision of your company, the mission, the objectives

Willing to take risks, thrust on your competences There is no certainty in life, situational awareness No assurance of Succees, every flight is a diferent flight Courage is the most identifiable trait, you have to be resilient Creative people do more experiments and failure is part of the process.

Cockpit Without acknowlegment, improvement won’t happen Admitting weaknesses, takes humility Problem of being the center, paradigm, overly focused on ourselves, selfishness and isolation Creates na open and inspiring environment, cockpit vs cabin

10 Leadership – Recognizing Humility, Ex. Stress Management in Flight Apropharma ® - Leadership For monitoring purposes, the human voice is a signal source. Stress is a biological and psychological response experienced on encountering a threat that we feel we do not have the resources to deal with.

Dealing with Stress in Flight Apropharma ® - Leadership Learn to recognize the symptoms of stress, not only in yourself, but also in other crewmembers (provide advice or assistance when necessary). Knowledge (Check-lists, Cross-Checks, Call-outs) Anticipate possible scenarios and threats (reduce the surprise factor) Briefings both on the ground before the flight and in flight. Make the best use of all available resources (CRM) Share tasks to avoid work overload. Always do things in advance whenever possible (avoid rushed actions). Should you still be faced with a totally unexpected stressful situation despite all your careful planning and anticipation, the keys are to recognize the symptoms, remain calm and buy yourself as much time to think as possible.

Fatigue and Vigilance Apropharma ® - Leadership Fatigue is a condition characterized by increased discomfort with lessened capacity for work, reduced efficiency of accomplishment, loss of power or capacity to respond to stimulation, and is usually accompanied by a feeling of weariness and tiredness. Fatigue is an expected aspect of life… A pilot should regulate his life as to have necessary mental qualities, fearless, with control of his nerves, senses and judgment.

13 Leadership - Quality 5: Focus/Strategic Planning Apropharma ® - Leadership Leaders focus on the results (needs), on what must be achieved. Practical tips to stay focused 1. Have daily rituals 2.Don’t leave things uncompleted 3.Visualize your goals 4.Don’t set to many big goals 5.Give yourself some daily time alone 6.Learn to avoid distractions (facebook, twitter, etc.) Make sure everyone is focused on the main objectives

BRIEFING This prepares and focuses our mind. COMMUNICATION Proper communication between crew members plays a large part in effective situation awareness. VIGILANCE Effective and active monitoring of instruments.
