Concept and Necessity

 A successful organization has one major attribute that sets it apart from unsuccessful organizations, viz., DYNAMIC AND EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP.

 Leadership is the ability to inspire and stimulate others to achieve worthwhile goals.  Leadership is the activity of influencing people to strive willingly for group objectives.

 Leadership is a psychological process of influencing followers (subordinates) and providing guidance, directing and leading the people in an organization towards attainment of the objectives of the enterprise.

“Leadership is interpersonal influence exercised in a situation and directed through communication process towards the attainment of a specified goal or goals.” – Tannenbaum.

 “Leadership is essentially a continuous process of influencing behaviour. A leader breaths life into the group and motivates it towards goals.” – Terry.

 Leadership is a key process in any organization. We attribute the success or failure of any organization to its leadership.  When a business venture, or a cricket team is successful, its managing director or the captain often receives the credit.

 When failure occurs it is usually the same individual at the top that is replaced.  Thus, one of the key elements of concern in any organization is how to attract, train, and keep people who will be effective leaders.

 Leadership is a function of leader, follower and situation, i.e.,  L= f(l, f, s)  In any situation when someone tries to influence the behavior of another individual, leadership occurs.  Individual attempting to influence behavior is the potential leader.  Person subject to influence is the follower.
