16.3 Weather Forecasts

Meteorologist A person who studies the weather
use instruments to measure temperature, air pressure, winds, humidity, and precipitation These measurements provide information to create weather maps and make weather forecasts Collect data from upper atmosphere and Earth’s surface

Station Models Records data meteorologists gather
Shows weather conditions at a specific location Information is entered into computers and used to forecast weather

Station Model

Station Model Symbols

Isotherms Weather maps have lines that connect locations of equal temperature called an isotherm “iso” means same, “therm” means temperature.

Isotherms (in color)

Isotherms

Isobars On a weather map, isobars are the lines drawn to connect points of equal atmospheric pressure. The closer together the isobars, the faster the wind is blowing. Isobars can indicate areas of high or low pressure.

Isobars

Weather Maps Once a meteorologist collects data, they then create a weather map. Meteorologists show weather conditions on a weather map using symbols. By viewing weather maps, we can predict future weather conditions.
