Declaring an Engineering Double Major/ Double Degree PRESENTED BY THE OFFICE OF UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING & ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Welcome! You are going through this workshop to learn about the A. James Clark School of Engineering's declaring Double Major/ Double Degree process. This workshop will give you the guidelines and breakdown the form needed to add another major to your engineering program or add engineering to the program you are currently taking. Completing this form correctly aids in the processing of your graduation application. This workshop is broken down into sections; your first section will give you the policies and guidelines you should keep in mind before deciding to pursue a double major or double degree form and the subsequent sections will teach you how to fill out the form. If after you go through the workshop and you still have questions, please email engrhelp@umd.edu. Introduction to the Double Major/ Double Degree Form

Please read the guidelines and follow the instructions. Options for Multiple Majors Students pursuing two majors should consider early on whether they wish to complete a Double Major or Double Degree, but no later than one full academic year before the expected date of graduation. Double Major (Single Degree with Two Majors) Students pursuing a single degree with two majors will be awarded one diploma, though both majors are noted on the student’s record and transcript. You must meet the requirements for each major as set by the departments offering the majors. You must complete a double major in the same semester Overlap with the electives may be permitted where appropriate. Consult your departmental academic advisors for more information. You must complete at least 120 credit hours to earn a single degree with two majors. The approved Engineering Double Major or Double Degree form is required to graduate with two degrees. Double Degree (Two Degrees) Pursuit of two degrees leads to the award of two diplomas. The degrees will be designated separately on the student’s record and transcript. You must meet the requirements for each major as set by the departments offering the majors. Each major must contain at least 18 unique semester hours not contained in the other. Overlap with the electives may be permitted where appropriate. Consult your departmental academic advisors for more information. You must earn a minimum of 30 semester hours beyond the total required for one degree (i.e., you must earn at least 150 hours). The approved Engineering Double Major or Double Degree form is required to graduate with two degrees. Signatures needed: Print form and obtain the appropriate signatures in the following order: Primary Department (1st Major Advisor or person in department with signing authority) Secondary Department (2nd Major Advisor or person in department with signing authority) Secondary College (Person in college of 2nd major with college signing authority) Primary College (if engineering: Undergraduate Advising & Academic Support Office, 1131 Martin Hall,) Policies, Guidelines & Instructions for Double Majors /Degrees

Top of the Form Fill out the top section of the form starting with your name and UID. The first major is your primary major and the courses taken will meet the requirements of the primary first. If a course can be applied to both majors or degrees the course will be applied to the primary major then applied to the second major. Your Anticipated Graduate Date is the date you are supposed to graduate before you receive approval. All courses and credits needed to graduate with both majors should be placed on this form. The completed courses should have a grade next to them. Please list all required courses for both majors and identify completed courses with a grade if possible. Circle (Yes or No) to indicate whether or not you have completed an Associates Degree (AA or ASE) Remember to indicate if you are selecting a Double Degree or Double Major. More information can be found in the introduction.

T his part of the form is for your primary major if you are an engineering student. The courses are applied to the primary major first and the college will be responsible for the maintenance of records and certification of general education requirements The courses needed for your engineering major listed under the 1st Major Required. Upper Level Electives (Technical, Breath, General, etc) should be filled out if possible to make sure courses don’t overlap with courses from the second major. As you complete courses, grades and semesters should be added into the form. Requirements can be met in different ways. Requirements met by AP test should be listed as "AP" in the grade area. Courses transferred in from a 2-year college should be listed as "T2" and "T4" if a course is from a 4-year institution. Primary Major

This part of the form is for your primary major. It has a list of the General Education requirements (GenED). In the blank areas, list the course for your primary major requirements. If you have taken courses already that apply to the GenED curriculum or to your Primary Major write out the UM course code and grade. Courses can double or triple count for requirements but not for credit. For example: ENES210 GenEd: DSSP, SCIS Will meet both SP and IS requirements but you can only use the credit once. General Education Requirements and Minors All courses not being used for your primary or secondary major will be placed in the Minor, Special Programs section.

With engineering as your primary major you will have to fill out the information for your second major. Here is an example for how your second major information should be filled out. The information should be a part of your four year plan with your second major. Make sure you sit with an advisor from your second major to get the correct courses. THERE HAS TO BE ENOUGH COURSES IN YOUR SECOND MAJOR TO COMPLETE THE DEGREE IF YOU DECIDE TO DROP YOUR PRIMARY MAJOR! Second Major

Signatures and Credit Totals All signatures are needed for a completed form. You should get signatures in order to make sure all parties are aware of the addition of the major or degree and have a conversation with your advisors and not just collect signatures. Credits for each major need to be documented and the total credits for both majors is needed as well. Credits that apply to both majors can only be counted once. The credit section will be filled out by the Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support office.

Engineering as Second Major Many of the students that will complete this workshop will be students that are engineers that want to add other majors however, there are also students that want to have other majors as their primary and engineering as the secondary major. Having engineering as a second major, you are required to complete a different form. Students that are adding engineering as a second major will have to make sure all Distributive Studies including the Natural Sciences (NL, NS) are filled in on the form. Instead of a student filling out the secondary side of the form, if engineering is secondary then a student would fill out the primary major information.

Congratulations! You have completed the declaring Double Degree/ Double Major workshop. If you still have questions please email engrhelp@umd.edu. Below are the links to each of the forms that you will need. The first section are the forms if Engineering is your primary major and the second section is if engineering will be your second major. Please make sure you choose the correct form so your courses can be calculated correctly. (download forms before printing) NOTE: All Civil Tracks are listed on the same form.
