Mr. Ruark’s Earth Science Thought of the Day- Variables and Branches of Earth Science Daily Objective(s): We will discuss analyze how scientific data is collected and analyzed. We will also take our quiz. Day 8 A scientist is trying to determine if a cactus will grow faster if it receives water versus if it does not get water. The scientist gets two cactus plants of the exact same type, the same size, and the same weight. He gives Cactus A 2 liters of water and Cactus B no water. After a month, he measures the two cactus plants to measure growth. 1.Which cactus is the experimental “group?” 2.What is the independent variable? 3. What is the dependent variable? 4. What conclusion do you think the scientist came up with? Unit 1: Introduction to Earth Science

Let’s review in groups. We will have 6 groups. 3-4 students in each group. You have 30 seconds to answer. You will get a point if you get it correct, regardless of how fast you raise it up.

Question 1 A testable idea or explanation that leads to scientific investigation: Prediction Inference Hypothesis Theory

Question 2 The scientific study of Earth’s atmosphere, especially in relation to weather and climate: Earth science Climatology Meteorology Weatherology

Question 3 In an experiment, the factor(s) that stay the same throughout the investigation: Independent variable Dependent variable Control variable Constant variable

Question 4 The scientific study of the ocean: Astronomy Geology Meteorology Oceanography

Question 5 The process of obtaining information by using the senses; the information obtained by using the senses: Hypothesis Theory Observation Inference

Question 6 ***2 points*** In an experiment, the factor that changes as a result of manipulation of another factor: a.Independent variable b.Dependent variable c.Control variable d.Constant variable

Question 7 The scientific study of the universe: Astronomy Geology Meteorology Oceanography

Question 8 The scientific study of the origin, history, and structure of Earth and the processes that shape Earth: Geology Climatology Meteorology Geography

Question 9 ***2 points*** A system of ideas that explains many related observations and is supported by a large body of evidence acquired through scientific investigation: Hypothesis Scientific law Conclusion Theory

Question 10 The scientific study of Earth and the universe around it: Astronomy Earth science Geology Space science

Question 11 In an experiment, the factor that is deliberately changed (manipulated): Independent variable Dependent variable Control variable Constant variable
