6.2 Adding Integers p. 277-279

Vocabulary Absolute value- the absolute value of a number is the distance between the number and 0 on a number line. – We sometimes refer to it as the positive value of a number. – The absolute value of -5 is written│-5│ – │-5│ = 5 and │5│= 5

Guided Practice Find the absolute value of the number: 1)1002) -9 3) -454) 22

Using models to add integers: = -1 = 1 + = 0 Model the following problem using red and green chips. -5 + -3 = -4 + 2 =

Example 1: You can use a number line to add integers. Always start at 0 Move to the right to add a positive integer Move to the left to add a negative integer -5 + 3 =

Guided Practice: On whiteboard Use a number line or + and – chips to find the sum. 1)-9 + (-5) 2)-7 + 4 3) 6 + (-13) 4) 12 + (-9)

Adding Integers Using Absolute Value SAME SIGNS: Add the absolute value of the numbers and use the common sign. Ex.10 + 14 = 24 -7 + (-5) = -12

Adding Integers Using Absolute Value DIFFERENT SIGNS: Find the absolute value of the numbers and then subtract the smaller from the larger. Use the sign of the number with the greater magnitude (farther from 0). Ex.13 + (-9) = 413-9 = 4 (13 has a greater magnitude, answer is positive.) -11 + 6 = -511-6 = 5 (-11 has a greater magnitude, answer is negative)

Adding Integers using Absolute Value OPPOSITES: The sum of an integer and its opposite is 0. -4 + 4 = 0

Example 2: a)Find the sum of -3 + (-12) -3 and -12 have same sign 3 + 12 = 15 keep the common sign (-) -3 + (-12) = -15 b)Find the sum of -7 + 9 -7 and 9 have different signs 9 – 7 = 2 (9 has a greater magnitude so answer is positive) -7 + 9 = 2

Guided Practice: Whiteboards 1)-5 + (-11)2) -9 + 6 3)0 + (-7)4) -13 + 15 5) 15 + (-8)6) -12 + 12

Adding 3 or more Integers Find the sum of 3 or more integers by adding them 2 at a time. Ex.12 + (-3) + 13 + (-5) 9 + 13 + (-5) 22 + (-5) 17 *Do you see the funnel?

Guided Practice: Whiteboards Aaron kept track of his earnings and expenses for 1 week. Write an expression, then find the sum of his earnings and expenses. Allowance$11 New headphones-$13 Basketball game & concessions -$9 Returned pop bottles $3 Walked neighbor’s dog $6

Homework Skills Practice p. 280 #13-25 odds
