WHAT IS VOCALOID? – YAMAHA'S VISION Vocaloid is a technology for singing voice synthesis developed by Yamaha, and the name of this software application. The software allows users to input melody and lyrics in order to synthesize singing. In other words, with this technology, singing can be produced without a singer. Singing voice synthesis is produced by using fragments of voices recorded from actual singers, called the Singer Library. By changing this Singer Library, various voices such as Miku Hatsune and Gakupoid are able to be created. There are countless musical pieces that have been uploaded to Nico Video and Youtube that use these products. In addition, songs that used Miku Hatsune and videos that were uploaded on Nico Video became extremely popular, and the UGC (self-produced content) grew at a fast pace. From there, CDs with Vocaloid songs entered the top-sellers lists, became popular songs for people to sing at Karaoke, and the software and music created from it have become a music culture in itself. Vocaloid technology has improved dramatically and the expressions and audio quality of Vocaloids have improved to the point where it's hard to tell the difference between them and living human beings. Not only does it allow for users to easily create songs and cover songs for their enjoyment, but it is progressing to allow users to make full-scale musical pieces as well. Furthermore, there are little restrictions on hardware as long as they are connected to the internet, so there are many possibilities for future uses including for mobile phones and portable game machines. http://www.vocaloid.com/en/about/

JAPAN'S BIGGEST POP STAR RIGHT NOW IS A HOLOGRAM BY GEOFFREY CAIN / NBC NEWS / APRIL 10, 2014 4:39 AM ET SEOUL, South Korea — Even by the standards of pop stars, Hatsune Miku is eccentric and protean, her mystique elusive. Her eyes are too round and blue to be real. She can be buxom or boyish, and almost painfully sultry — all in a droid-ish, understated way. She dons a school uniform, with thigh-high power boots and a flared ultra-micro miniskirt. Her pig-tailed turquoise hair is so long that she risks tripping over it as she dances lithely in front of her adoring, sell-out crowds. In a saccharine soprano — reminiscent of a castrated Mouseketeer — her lyrics soar over the roars and ovations of glowstick-wielding teenage audiences. Her fans wouldn’t have it any other way. Hatsune Miku is big. Really big. Right now, she's Japan’s favorite pop star, according to Japan Today. She has more than 100,000 original (crowdsourced) songs, 1.8 million Facebook followers, and has even been the face for Google, Toyota, and Louis Vuitton, the paper reports. The singer— a 16-year-old Virgo, measuring 5 foot 2 inches and weighing a paltry 93 pounds — looks as though she came straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon. And yet she never fails to elude the paparazzi. There’s a good reason for that. She’s not human. Rather, “she” consists of a digitally synthesized voice connected to a hologram, an ever- evolving, crowd-sourced humanoid that performs all over Japan and, more recently, at sold-out concerts around the world. www.nbcnews.com/news/world/japans-biggest-pop-star-right-now-hologram-n76506

FAKES/JOKES April, 2008: Kasane Teto was an April Fool’s Day joke on April 1, 2008 made out by the perpetrators to be a new Crypton Future Media VOCALOID. The legacy of this prank continued on for years after its original run and even today some less- informed fans believe she is a VOCALOID. Some time after the joke, an UTAU voicebank for her was created. April, 2012: On April 1, 2012, VocaTone announced that “James” would be made into a VOCALOID known as Bird-loid, however, this was an April Fools day joke. April, 2012: Another April Fools joke was “Animaloid” which turned out to be also a hint about the upcoming MAYU VOCALOID. April, 2015: Itoh Hiroyuki was a VOCALOID4 male vocal from Crypton Future Media, Inc.. His voicebank was claimed to use the E.V.E.C. system, making him a V4X and he was part of the “CEO Vocal Series” of Crypton. When his cart button is clicked, the button moves off screen and is replaced with a small advertisement to purchase Megurine Luka V4X instead. http://vocaloid.wikia.com/wiki/Status Kasane Teto Megurine Luka V4X
