Warm-up Q3-#1 1.How do you arrive at a first impression? What do you observe in people to draw your conclusions about theme? 2.How do people judge one another? Based on what characteristics?

Characterization The development of a character in literature, art, or film Two Types: – Indirect – Direct

Indirect Actions Speech Appearance Thoughts/Beliefs Reputation (how others view the character)

Direct The character is assigned a trait directly by the narrator. EX: Loyd was an angry man. 1.If the author wants to indirectly illustrate Loyd as Angry, how could he/she do so? 2. What is the difference in the effect of each usage?

Round vs Flat Characters Round- Have many character traits, unique and diverse ones. Flat- These characters are one-dimensionally, possessing perhaps 1-2 traits Why would a story need both types of characters? What is the benefit of including both?

Dynamic vs Static Dynamic Characters are ones that undergo a change or transformation. Static Characters don’t change. They have the same traits from the beginning of the story until the end.

Homework Write one page (minimum) using the five methods of indirect characterization developing a character with your four assigned traits. Use 1 st or 3 rd Person POV Do not use the assigned words. Underline each method you use.
