3 The 1998 Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA) established a performance-based organization to administer the Federal Student Aid programs at the U.S. Department of Education. These programs include grants, loans, and work-study to help students pay for education beyond high school. SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE FEDERAL WORK STUDY PROGRAM

4 The FWS Program provides funds, that are earned, through part-time employment to assist students in financing the costs of post-secondary education FEDERAL WORK STUDY PROGRAM SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE

5 Amount of funds available are subject to change each year Number of positions available for the college are determined by the amount of available funding FEDERAL WORK STUDY PROGRAM SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE

6 Submit request with following information:  Job Description  Work Schedule  Campus Location  Physical Demands of Job  Student Qualifications APPLYING FOR & OBTAINING FWS POSITIONS SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE

7  Full-time student with 9 or more credit hours  Maintain satisfactory academic progress  Receive Pell Grant  Determined eligible by Financial Aid  Receive a Financial Aid award letter STUDENT ELIGIBILITY SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE

8  Supervisor may request returning student be re-assigned to same department  Student may request to be re-assigned to same department  Student must re-apply for financial aid  Student must re-apply for same position RETURNING STUDENTS SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE

9 Students Paid $8.00 an hour Work up to 20 hours per week only Work a regular established schedule  Are NOT allowed to work between academic terms  May NOT earn more than their established financial need WAGES AND TIME SHEETS SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE

10  Must submit a monthly time sheet  Timesheets must be signed by supervisor and/or FWS Coordinator  Timesheet must be submitted to FWS Coordinator WAGES AND TIME SHEETS SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE

11  Timesheets cannot reflect hours during a student’s scheduled class time  Students should work and report time in 15 minute intervals  Must have 30 minute break if working a 10-hour day WAGES AND TIME SHEETS SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE

12 Timesheets are due by the 15 th of each month!!!! WAGES AND TIME SHEETS SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE Student will get paid the following month if timesheet is submitted after the 16 th !

13 Each student must receive a performance evaluation at the end of each academic term Discuss any problems with student if performance is not satisfactory Students are here for academic reasons first! PERFORMANCE EVALUATION SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE

14 Supervisors should discuss problems concerning job performance with student. If no improvements are shown:  Contact FWS Coordinator about student’s problem with attendance, performance, and/or conduct  Document student’s performance on Positive Discipline form  Meet with student and FWS Coordinator POSITIVE DISCIPLINE SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE

15 Be sure your FWS student worker knows: Established work hours Job expectations How to perform job tasks Departmental procedures Departmental dress code YOUR ROLE AS A SUPERVISOR SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE

16 Advise student who to call if they are unable to come to work or if they are late Advise student who to report to if you are not going to be there Ensure student has sufficient amount of work Monitor and control hours worked Know payroll process (when timesheets are due) Review student’s timesheet before signing it Advise FWS Coordinator if student is no longer working YOUR ROLE AS A SUPERVISOR SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE
