5 Responsibilities and Jurisdictions of Federal Agencies FBI-responsible for investigating federal crimes such as kidnapping, bank robbery and large scale financial fraud DEA-responsible for investigating and enforcing U.S. narcotics laws. Illegal narcotics on a large scale. ATF-responsible for investigating crimes related to illegal use of tobacco, firearms and alcohol. CIA-responsible for monitoring foreign threats to U.S. National security. Using espionage [undercover agents or spies] DHS-responsible for investigating domestic threats, especially terrorism, within U.S. borders. Created in response to the 9/11 attacks. DOT-responsible for enforcing regulations related to U.S. travel: highways, interstates, bridges and airports. FEMA-responsible for responding to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and hurricanes and provide relief to victims. HHS-responsible for enforcing federal health regulations as well as carrying out Medicare and Medicaid to citizens. CDC-responsible for identifying public health threats such as infectious diseases and preventing widespread outbreaks. IRS-responsible to collecting federal taxes and enforcing federal tax laws. NTSB-responsible mainly for railways and airways and maintaining safety. USCIS-responsible to protecting U.S. borders from invasion and illegal immigration. Responsible for accepting and integrating new citizens into the U.S. Also making sure products entering U.S. border are safe.

6 Federal Agency Project Option A Create a flyer informing the public what services the agency provides and what the agency is responsible for. Include specific details about: The agency’s mission What the members are called Activities the agency is involved in List and explain what their responsibilities are. Option B Create a fictional news story describing how the agency responded to a situation. Make sure you include in your story how the agency and its people responded positively or negatively [what they did good or how they could have done better] Did it do a good or bad job? Why? How? Could be a television news story, magazine/newspaper article, etc.
