2. Driving Question What are the dangers and disadvantages of hydrogen fuel cells? What about other types of fuel cells? How does this compare to standard fuels?

3. Background Information  A fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity. Often compared to a battery, a fuel cell will produce more energy and can last forever as long as it is supplied with hydrogen.

4. The dangers and disadvantages of hydrogen fuel cells  Its very expensive to make hydrogen.  Hydrogen is very hard to transport, and expensive as well.  To replace the foundation of gasoline, hydrogen fuel would become even more expensive!  This is a highly flammable gas, and has many risks associated with its use.

Other types of fuel cells Methanol fuel cell  Most of these are used for smaller applications like computer and phone batteries  Can run forever as long as it is supplied with fuel to do so  These are clean and carbon free fuel cells Alkaline fuel cell  Similar to the hydrogen fuel cell, alkaline fuel cells consume hydrogen and oxygen to produce water, heat, and electricity  These are among the most efficient fuel cells

How do these compare to standard fuels?  Methanol and Alkaline fuel cells:  Methanol fuel cells don’t produce enough power to run cars like gasoline does  Alkaline fuel cells can be easily poisoned by small amounts of CO 2  Hydrogen fuel cell:  The amount of energy they produce is amazing, however the cost of laying out the infrastructure and making the hydrogen and the actual fuel cells, would be very high
