Ms. Alexander’s First Grade Class Welcome, students!

Welcome to First Grade! I will introduce you to first grade and to our classroom. If you have any questions during my presentation, please raise your hand and wait to be called on.

All About Me My background – I grew up in Americus, Ga. – I attended East View Elementary, A. S. Staley High School, and Georgia Southwestern College. My experience – I’ve been teaching for 22 years. – I have also taught kindergarten and Second grades, but first is my favorite.

My Goals To give you the academic and social skills you need to progress to second grade. To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. To help you make new friends and discover new interests.

Class Subjects The subjects we cover during first grade are: – Reading and writing – Math – Language Arts – Phonics – Writing – Music, P.E., Art

Reading Our main focus in reading is improving vocabulary skills. Learning basic sight words. Improving comprehension skills Developing fluency when reading. Recognizing the main idea in a story.

Writing Writing a simple sentence. Writing a compound sentence, Changing 2 simple sentences into a complete sentence. a compound sentence. Understand the use of capital letters in a sentence. Recognizing the parts of a speech specifically nouns, pronouns, verbs and adjective

Math Understand numeration. Recognize and count money to $1.00. Understand units of Measurement. Understand math symbols +,-,= etc. Understand basic concepts more, less, more than, least, most, as many as etc. Solve basic math problems in involved in everyday life. Understand place value. Adding and subtracting two-digit numbers without regrouping..

Language Arts Recognizing a simple sentence, a compound sentence. Understand the use of capital letters in a sentence. Recognizing the parts of a speech specifically nouns, pronouns, verbs and adjectives Recognizing contractions, compound words, Recognize the difference between a letter, a poem, a fairy tale. a fiction and non-fiction story

Phonics Recognize the alphabet and their related sounds Distinguish between long and short vowel sounds in words. Recognize blends, diagraphs. Understand abbreviations. Recognize suffixes and prefixes in words. Alphabetize words to the second letter. Understand word parts/syllables-base words The use of the dictionary, the encyclopedia and web to find information.

A ccelerated R eading Students will begin Accelerated Reading when they have mastered at least the first 100 hundred sight words. After we have begun, please encourage your child to read and test on at least 1 book every day. The students need to average 85 and read the number of books set for them and the books have to be on the students reading level in order to meet their monthly goals.

Music, Art, Physical Education This year will mark our first year as a fine arts academy. The students will be engaged in a variety of literary activities the can only enhance their growth an development. We will have Physical Education, Art, Music, Drama,

Classroom Community Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. Our class rules are: – Be respectful and responsible. – Be organized and follow directions. – Be on time. – Be prepared.

Homework I will assign about 30 minutes of homework every night except on Fridays. This includes 20 minutes of reading. Your homework is due every morning, beginning on Tuesday through Friday. No homework will be assigned on the weekends

Tardiness School starts at 7:45 A.M. Breakfast will w\be served at this time. If you aren’t in the classroom by the time the second bell rings, please check in at the school office before coming to class. If you are tardy four times, the school will contact your parents.

Testing – We will have a spelling test and math test every Friday. – Please study daily. – Our spelling words will be sent home on Mondays of each week. If you lose the words for the week, please uses our web site to obtain another copy. – Our math test will be based on the skills that are covered in our class that week. The students will be given an early literacy test to determine their strengths and weaknesses to help us know your child better.
