1 TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR “DO SOMETHING” NARRATIVE Mr. Gunnink American Literature 2010-2011

2 Narrative/Essay Hybrid  Tells a compelling story while also explaining your beliefs/reactions/growth  Actual events in the narrative should be supplemented with commentary/explanation as you connect your actions to your beliefs.  Your beliefs determine your actions and your actions demonstrate your beliefs.

3 Purpose  Why are you telling this story? (other than for the grade)  What do you want the reader to know/learn? (events, ideas, messages, lessons)

4 Setting, Character, Plot Status Quo- What was the world of the story at the beginning of it? What is the protagonist like? Conflict- What is the spark that begins the story? What issues/obstacles must the protagonist face (internal and/or external)? Resolution- What is the results of the protagonist’s struggles? New Status Quo- How has the world or the protagonist been changed by this experience?

5 Conclusion  What do you want to echo in the mind of your reader? What do you want them to take away?  The ending should be memorable and point towards the future

6 Introduction  The introduction should establish the conflict without giving away too much of the story (Preview)  Should make the reader want to continue reading  Surprise, Mystery, Thoughtful Question(s)

7 Sequence Chronological- Begin at the beginning, end at the end In medias res- Start in the middle, then catch us back up Flashbacks- Interrupt the present narrative for key events from the past Weave- Two or more connected stories told at alternating times Commentary- Insert information, reaction, or analysis outside of the story but relevant to it

8 Tone  What emotional response are you trying to get from your reader?  Is this going to be funny? Serious? Uplifting? Upsetting? Heartbreaking? Inspiring?  Whatever you choose, consider language that emphasizes that emotion (especially consider first and last sentences).
