Margaret Waggoner Hour 8

LOCATION Durham, North Carolina Urban setting in peaceful North Carolina, the campus offers 55 acres of garden for study, horticulture, solitude and inspiration. Only a couple hours from the ocean one direction and the mountains another, and just down the street from busy Raleigh, NC.

HISTORY 1839- Union Institute Society was established in West Durham. 1859- UIS reorganized as Trinity College…moved to Durham in 1892 1924- James Buchanan Duke turns Trinity College into Duke University. Today, Duke is well known for its schools of medicine, law, business and engineering.

THE BLUE DEVILS During WWI, the well trained and smart French soldiers were nick-named “les diables bleus” (the blue devils). The senior class of the year 1923 made plans to select a mascot after a football season without one. The options were Blue Titans, Blue Eagles, Polar Bears, Blue Devils, Royal Blazes, or Blue Warriors but Blue Devils had the most support.

MEN’S BASKETBALL Coach: Mike Krzyewski MVP: Kyle Singler- 6-8 senior, forward, average 15.9 pts., 6.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.2 steals per game, started 110 out of 111 career games, Nat’l Player of the Year, First Team All- American, team captain. Duke was the number one pick on many people’s brackets this year but lost in the fourth round to Arizona

DID YOU KNOW? Duke University hold 12 National Championships: Men's Soccer (1986); Men's Basketball (1991); Men's Basketball (1992); Women's Golf (1999); Men's Basketball (2001); Women's Golf (2002); Women's Golf (2005); Women's Golf (2006); Women's Golf (2007); Women's Tennis (2009); Men's Basketball (2010); Men's Lacrosse (2010) Duke has about 13,000 undergraduates and graduates attending

Ode To Duke Duke University, it's colors black and blue to the blue devils it's fans stay true. There was a man named James B. Duke who dreamed one day of having a school so blue, and transformed Trinity college into something new. Today, gardens cover the campus grounds and there are studious people all around. They study medicine, engineering, business and law and they graduate without the slightest flaw! 13,000 undergrads work hard to graduate and when they do, they've got a full plate. 12 National championships they have if you count, but in basketball this year, it was the fourth round that they got out. Kyle Singler is the best on the team but winning this year, I guess, wasn't his dream. No doubt they'll bounce back next year and the crowd I'm sure will be there to cheer. Duke is in North Carolina, close to Raliegh and Chapel Hill and when they plan UNC, the road between them is sure to be filled. Here's to Duke, the Blue Devils we love!
