9. The “Bronco” Name Western was initially nicknamed The “Hill Toppers” but this was changed because of the confusion with nicknames of other universities. In 1939 Assistant Football coach John Gill submitted the nick name Bronco and it is now held in high regard by the students and faculty. Bronco is a name that represents power and dignity. This is reflective of many people that are associated with WMU!
