…… American Volleyball Coaches Association Sand Volleyball Status Update AVCA DI General Meeting Dec. 16, 2010 Kansas City, MO

Legislation American Volleyball Coaches Association Playing and Practice Season – Championships Cabinet: Proposal 2009-83 Format for Competition - borrowed from intercollegiate tennis – sand volleyball will be played as a flighted team sport with five teams of two players representing each institution. The average squad size will be 13-15 women.

Legislation American Volleyball Coaches Association Playing and Practice Season – Championships Cabinet: Proposal 2009-83 First date of competition is the 1 st Thursday in March. Season is eight weeks or the end of the school year whichever comes first. The minimum number of playing dates is 8, maximum is 16.

Legislation American Volleyball Coaches Association Financial Aid Cabinet: Proposal 2009- 70 Maximum new financial aid awards for Sand Volleyball: Sand Team only: maximum of 8 equivalency scholarships available in 2010-11. Sand Team and Court Team: maximum of 6 equivalency scholarships, to be added over a period of 4 years starting with 3 in 2010-11 and 1 each subsequent year. Maximum of 14 counters on aid in Sand Volleyball.

Legislation American Volleyball Coaches Association Financial Aid Cabinet Proposal 2009-70 A student-athlete who only participates (practices or competes) and is a counter in sand volleyball during her first year of collegiate enrollment at the certifying institution, but who later participates in women's volleyball during her second year of enrollment, that the institution must consider the student-athlete also as a counter in women's volleyball for her first year of enrollment.

Legislation American Volleyball Coaches Association Personnel/Recruiting Cabinet: Proposals 2009-19(two options) and 2009-39 This version will pass 2009-19-B: sand VB may have up to two coaches; court staff stays at 3; staff members can do both as long as two and three maximums are no exceeded.

Legislation American Volleyball Coaches Association Personnel/Recruiting Cabinet: Proposals 2009-19(two options) and 2009-39 Schools with both sports may have 100 days of recruiting, but the extra 20 days must be used to recruit sand VB tournaments. Schools with just Sand Volleyball may have 80 days to recruit. No more than two recruiters may be off campus at one time.

Legislative Interpretation American Volleyball Coaches Association Question: If an institution does not need another sport for either gender- equity or sports-sponsorship purposes and also does not have money to fund women's sand volleyball travel to get to the minimum of eight dates of competition, may the institution add a women's sand volleyball team simply to pick up the opportunity to train year round and just use the four women's volleyball nonchampionship segment competitions, which are already funded, to play sand volleyball? Answer: Yes. The playing and practice season establishes the maximum contest limits; however, it is not a requirement that an institution compete in the maximum number of dates of competition in the nonchampionship segment. In fact, an institution in this example, may participate in the four dates of competition for women's sand volleyball and still compete in four other dates of competition in women's volleyball during the declared nonchampionship segment if it so desires. The impact of such a schedule is that women's sand volleyball shall not be used for sports sponsorship purposes.
