The Normans came from Normandy, France. However, they were originally Vikings from Scandinavia. At the beginning of the tenth century, the French King, Charles the Simple, had given some land in the North of France to a Viking cheif named Rollo. He hoped that if he gave the Vikings their own land in France they would stop attacking France. The land was know as Northmania. It was later shortened to Normandy.

In the twelfth century, there were many clans in Ireland. Each clan had their own King, the most powerful King was called the high king. To become a high King, a King had to fight against other powerful kings. These constant fights meant that the kings had many enemies. The reason the Normans came to Ireland was because of the fighting! However, the Normans did not behave badly. They learnt to speak Irish, they could also read and write in Irish and many sent their children to schools for poets and lawyers

Throughout the medieval time it was said that the only way to keep order was to make sure that people were afraid of the punishment Example: The kings court (trial by court) Trial by fire (you had to pick up hot iron bars walk three or more paces; In a couple of days your hand was checked if it was healed you were innocent) Trial by water (their hands and feet were tied together, and they were thrown into water; if they floated they were guilty if they sank they were innocent) Trial by battle (they would fight with the accuser (usually to the death) the winner would be considered to be in the right)

The Normans were great builders. Norman lords lived in strong stone castles. Many of these castles can still be seen in Ireland today Ireland's finest cathedrals were built by the Normans. Some of them are still in use today - St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, St. Canice's Cathedral in Kilkenny and St. Mary's in Limerick

The Normans brought two new languages to Ireland - French and English Many Irish families came to work for Norman lords. They learned how to grow many new crops. They divided the land into three long strips or fields and learned different ways of tilling the soil.
