4. M.A.I.N. The main reasons of “The Great War” had been brewing for several years. Use the acronym M.A.I.N. to remember the 4 major causes.

5. Militarism Glorification of military strength. European countries knew if a war broke out they would need to have a strong army to survive. An arms race began, and each country tried to make sure it had the largest army and the best weapons.

6. Alliances Most European countries felt they had to align with other countries to stay strong. They agreed to defend each other in the event one of them gets attacked. This meant one move and the whole continent would be at war.
