2 We Live in Europe We are part of the European UnionEuropean Union The European Parliament has policies and legislation that we have to follow. All the businesses in the EU who are member states have to follow EU laws.have

4 We live in the United Kingdom The National Government of the UK is run by the Conservative Lib Dem Coalition. David Cameron is the Prime Minister. Laws and policies are created by the Government through the House of Commons and agreed by the House of Lords. All businesses in the UK have to follow UK legalisation – Acts and Policies

5 House of Commons 650 members of Parliament Elected MP’s form the Government. The party with the majority of seats/members runs the Government. At the present our Government is formed by Conservatives/Lib Democrats Alliance The Prime Minister is David Cameron and Deputy Nick Clegg House of Lords 825 members of the House of Lords. The majority (about 700) are life peers Life peers: The majority (about 700) of members are appointed for their lifetime by the Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister. Any British, Irish or Commonwealth citizen who is a UK resident and Archbishops and bishops: 26 Church of England archbishops and bishop. House. Ninety-two remain heredity peers i.e. Houses of Parliament

8 Government What does the Government Do? Who works in the Government? What does an MP do? Who are the three groups of people that an MP has to impress? What is a constituency? Who is the Newhall MP? How is a new law introduced into the UK?

9 We live in South Derbyshire The Local Government is run by the South Derbyshire Distinct Council – run by elected Councillors who make decisions about the local council. Businesses pay Business Rates and have to follow local authority policies and people have to pay Council Tax
