Teacher Interview What is your philosophy on teaching science to elementary kids? Economically disadvantaged kids? I think science is most beneficial to elementary aged children when there is as much hands on activity and real life experience and connections as possible. I think this is true whether children are economically disadvantaged or not. Why do you want to be a Science teacher? There are so many connections to be made for students in Science. Reading and Math are such huge parts of this subject, and it makes it all worth it when the connections, prior knowledge and math all come together. What Science organizations are you involved with (as a member or other)? I am not currently part of any science organizations at this time. Tell me about a current science event that you have read about this week? How would you use this in the classroom? None at this time.

Cont. of Interview In which field of science do you feel the least knowledgable, Explain. I believe elementary teachers are given a minimum amount of science education in college. Teachers in self contained classrooms may have an hour and a half per week if they are lucky to teach science. Middle school and High school teachers develop an area of concentration they are going to be teaching. What science curriculum do you have experience with? What do you like or dislike about them? I have background in anatomy zoology, and chemistry as a result of being a nursing major. Where do you find resources other than the Science book in order to keep your students current on the constantly evolving knowledge of science? The internet

Cont. of Interview Why would or would not you use lab groups or lab partners in your class? How would your establish lab groups/lab partners (what criteria would you use)? It is difficult because of space restrictions in the classroom and time constraints during the day. Lab groups are usually established through current seating assignments. How would you evaluate lab groups/partners to be to know that each student is learning and participating? Evaluations usually consist of classroom observations, student participation, and through any worksheets or data for the assignment. How would you integrate technology into your science teaching? Again time restraints are a big problem. I use the computers as much as possible. How would you integrate math? Time, temperature and basic facts can all be part of science. Reading? The textbook has lots of text features that can be used as part of reading in Science. Writing in science can be used through written explanations of labs and with BCRs and Problem of the Week.
