AVID Beginnings Presented by Mrs. Byrd, Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Hardison, and Mr. Zahavi

 AE spans K-8 in three stages: Beginnings, Foundations, and Bridges. Each stage is designed to meet the needs of students within that range of development. ◦ AVID Elementary Beginnings addresses the beginning years of education, when students are emerging as learners. Students are learning to read, learning to write, and learning to learn. AE Beginnings classrooms are designed to promote learning to WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading) throughout the academic day.

 Beginnings – emerging learners (3 rd grade)  Foundations- becoming independent learners (4 th and 5 th grade)  Bridges- becoming independent thinkers (5 th and 6 th grade)

 Binders ◦ Pencil pouch – pencils, highlighter, pen, erasers ◦ Agenda ◦ Spiral notebooks for homework ◦ Homework folder ◦ Reading log Everything a student needs at school to work and at home to complete work all in one place.

 Writing to learn, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading to learn  Students are encouraged to ask questions and work collaboratively with peers.  Teachers lead organization with binders and note taking.  Students learn to write reflectively and read for information.

 3 rd grade students are developing the necessary study habits to be life long learners.  Each 3 rd grade student will begin to think about going to college, what college they will attend, and what degree they might pursue.  Students will learn to set obtainable goals.

 Students will learn and use AVID strategies in all classes until 5 th grade.  If students want to continue, they will apply to middle school AVID as an elective class at the end of 5 th grade.  However, these skills will help them as learners regardless of whether they make it into the program in middle school.

While we do share a common routine and practice similar procedures, our classrooms do reflect our individual personalities.

 Every 3 rd grade classroom uses the behavior chart that allows students to clip up and down throughout the day.  Students earn gator bucks at the end of the day.  Every teacher allows students to spend gator bucks on Fridays.

 Students are responsible for their binders, teachers do not collect or look through binders to find notes or work.  Students are responsible for writing in their own agenda daily. Agendas will be signed each day by teacher and should be signed each night by a parent.  Teachers do provide several verbal reminders to students daily.

 3 rd grade students are expected to read for 20 minutes nightly and complete the reading log for a Language Arts grade.  Word Study homework is to be completed nightly with all work due on Friday.  Math homework will be assigned daily Monday – Thursday. Math homework is a continuum of the lesson taught in class that day.

 We do switch classes for word study.  Students took a mandatory spelling inventory the 1 st week of school. Your child’s scores will be reviewed during the 1 st conference.  Students were divided into groups based on their current spelling stage as assessed by the inventory.  Inventories will be completed again in January and students will be regrouped based on their growth at that time.  All word study groups follow the same basic daily routine and all groups have the same grading policy.

 School webpage for school wide information  Teacher webpage of the homeroom teacher and word study teacher  Renaissance Home Connect – access to all AR tests and ACC math assignments.  Parent Portal- you can find the link to the request form required to get access on our school webpage.  Success Maker is a program we do at school, but can be completed at home for more practice.

 3 rd grade utilizes parent volunteers every Friday to assist with word study grading. This is a great opportunity to help the teachers, please check with the PTO if you are interested.  All parent volunteers need to be approved through the county office, see Mrs. Cleve for details.  Volunteers are welcome through out the week if it is arranged in advance with the teacher.
