2  The earliest civilization in the region was centered around the Indus River in 2500 BCE  While the territory was mainly in modern-day Pakistan, parts of it extended into India  It is believed that the people of this civilization traded with people of civilizations in Southwest Asia by traveling the Arabian Sea by boat

3  By about 1500 BCE, a new group of people, called the Indo-Aryans, came into northern India  This group mixed with people already living in the area  They blended their religious beliefs and customs to create the basis for modern Indian religion  Other developments of the Indo-Aryans, including cotton fabric and the game of chess, are still in use today around the world

4  About 1000 CE, Muslim armies began raiding northwestern India  A Muslim kingdom was eventually set up at Delhi, a city in northern India  This kingdom slowly gained control of most of India and Pakistan  Even though Islam was the religion of the kingdom, most Indians kept their own customs and beliefs  In the early 1500s, a new invasion from Central Asia swept into India

6  The invading group, known as Mughals, defeated the kingdom of Delhi and took over most of northern India  The empire eventually expanded into central India and beyond  At its largest, the empire covered most of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh  The reign of the Mughals was a golden age in India for architecture, painting, poetry, and religious freedrom

8  In the 1600s and 1700s, the Mughal Empire slowly grew weaker  Wars in the central part of the empire drained money from the empire  Revolts in others parts of the territory also drained resources  Europeans, who had been trading with the Mughals since the 1600s, slowly became a major force in India due to the weakening of the empire
