2. CIVIL WAR EVENTS Objective: Students will be able analyze key events of the Civil War and interpret actions taken. Purpose: Study important events Standard(s): 1.9 1.10 2.1 Historical Thinking Skill: Evaluation & Synthesis.

3. WARM-UP: CNN STUDENT NEWS Write down facts as you watch the video. 1 point = 1 correctly written fact. I need to see at least (a minimum of) 5 facts. More facts may earn additional extra-credit points. What I want to see: Ex. The President was in Europe on Thursday. Give a thing, a place, and a time.

4. ACTIVITY: KEY CIVIL WAR EVENTS Key Civil War Events 1. Dred Scott Decision Famous case in which a slave tried to sue his master for living in a northern Free State. Court proclaimed that African Americans were not considered citizens, whether enslaved or not. 2. Harpers Ferry A raid led by white abolitionist John Brown to start an armed slave revolt in 1859 by seizing a U.S. arsenal at Harper’s Ferry. 3. Abraham Lincoln elected President, 1860 Lincoln captured the presidency without winning a single electoral vote in the South. While gaining only 39% of the popular vote, Lincoln won 180 electoral votes – the majority he needed to win. 4. States Secede, Confederate States of America Formed Lower south secedes, outraged that a President could be elected without any southern electoral votes. Argument was that since states had voluntarily joined the U.S. they also could choose to leave it. 5. War Begins: Fort Sumter, Battle of Bull Run Fort Sumter – A federal fort on an island in Charleston's harbor. Attacked and conquered by Confederate forces. Battle of Bull Run – First major battle of the Civil War. Confederate victory.

5. ACTIVITY: KEY CIVIL WAR EVENTS 6. Shiloh, New Orleans, Antietam Shiloh – Bloodiest single battle that had taken place on the North American continent at that time. Shattered remaining illusions either side had about the glory of war. New Orleans – Union naval battle. Confederate loss. Would cut off southern economy. Antietam – Lee ordered the South to invade the North. Hope that a victory in the North would arouse European support. Ended in defeat and retreat of Southern forces to Virginia. Massive casualties. Bloodiest day of the Civil War. 7. Emancipation Proclamation Slaves in areas of rebellion (the south) against the government would be free. 8. Battle of Gettysburg, Battle of Vicksburg Gettysburg – Confederate climax of the war. Ended in retreat. Vicksburg – Confederate fort attacked by Ulysses S. Grant. 9. Sherman’s March to the Sea, Lincoln Reelected President Sherman’s March – Headed to S. Carolina to destroy Confederate resources. Many homes burned to the ground. Sherman captured Atlanta, Georgia in 1864. Lincoln Reelected – Challenged by “Radical” Republicans, who wanted to punish the South for the war. Democrat’s promised to negotiate an end to the war. Sherman’s victory of Atlanta changed the political climate and Lincoln won. 10. Lee Surrenders to Grant at Appomattox April 1865; desertions had shrunk the Confederate army. April 9, Lee meets Grant to discuss terms of surrender. Southern soldiers would not be punished so long as they obeyed the laws where they lived. 11. President Lincoln is Assassinated. Assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate sympathizer, on April 14, 1865 at Ford’s Theater in Washington.
