2 MARNET - Key objectives  Establish a Formal Network of Marine Socio Economists.  Construct Data base of comprehensive, comparable and re- producible Marine Socio- Economic data for Atlantic regions.  Create an Atlas of Marine Socio Economic Indicators publicly available.  Put in Place Practical Initiatives in partner regions utilising the database and atlas.

4 Marnet: Database Framework  Objectives Develop a set of comparable data on maritime activities in the Atlantic Area Analyse Atlantic maritime economy development Define economic and geographical dimensions Compile a common set of quantitative data: accounting indicators Use Eurostat statistical classifications: NACE and NUTS

5 The Atlas  Scale: NUTS 0, NUTS 2, NUTS 3 and LAU1 Atlantic Regions.  Data years 2008 - 2012  15 sectors of data  52 NACE codes, each containing business indicators and proxy data

9 Practical Initiatives  Practical initiatives rolled-out in each Member State, utilising the collected data e.g: Study of maritime transport, Competitiveness and vulnerability index of marine economies Economic contribution of cruise port Comparisons of value of marine sectors across regions Sub-supply synergies between shipbuilding and marine energy sectors 9

10 MARNET- Current Status  Marnet Project winds up on 30 th April 2015  Final Steering Committee meeting 31 st March in Brussels to consider work programme for possible new application and potential work packages  Funding application will be subject to assessment under the Atlantic Area Interreg programme (late 2015)?  Preliminary discussions have taken place on: Update and extension of existing indicator framework Addition of new indicator data and new studies Addressing data needs identified by DG MARE 10
