6 Harlem Renaissance What? A flowering of African American art, literature, music and culture in the United States led primarily by the African American community based in Harlem, New York City

7 Harlem Renaissance When? Begin ◦1924 – Opportunity magazine hosted a party for black writers with many white publishers attending End ◦1929 – The year the stock market crashed, resulting in the Great Depression

8 Harlem Renaissance Who? Many of these people were part of the Great Migration out of the South and other racially stratified communities

9 Great Migration Between 1910 and 1930, the African American population in the North rose by about 20 percent overall. Cities such as Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Cleveland had some of the biggest increases

10 Harlem Renaissance Where? Of the almost 750,000 African Americans who moved North, nearly 175,000 moved to Harlem (23%) Harlem is a section of Manhattan that covers three square miles; therefore, Harlem became the largest concentration of black people in the world

12 Harlem Renaissance Why? The end of World War I and black veterans The formation of civil rights organizations (NAACP) and black solidarity movements (UNIA) The ascendance of Harlem as the “Negro capital of the world” A new sense of economic, social, and cultural potential/opportunity

13 Marcus Garvey The war also brought in its wake a series of devastating race riots culminating in the 1919 outbreaks in Chicago and Washington Black politics shifted as Marcus Garvey mobilized tens of thousands of supporters and confronted the newly formed NAACP and the African-American establishment with a mass political movement championing black nationalism and Pan-Africanism Against racial integration!

14 Harlem Renaissance Significance? Transformed American culture! ◦White Americans could not deny the intellectual contributions of black Americans African American pride! ◦Black Americans showed their love of their culture and history through the arts. Civil Rights Movement ◦A crucial step in the fight for civil rights
