3 1 st 6 pres. from VA or MA & aristocrats 5/6 of the pres. went to college & well-educated G. Washington-Didn’t go to college but was rich Would you have the chance to be pres. if you live in TN & were poor? Andrew Jackson becomes the 7 th pres. Any white male born in US could be the pres.

4 Old Hickory 1767-AJ born in a log cabin Border b/t NC & SC Parents-Poor Scotch-Irish farmers Scotland to Ireland to America AJ’s dad died b4 he was born Mom moved w/3 sons in w/ sister 11 children AJ learned to speak out, wrestle, gain respect, & read

5 Old Hickory Most farmers couldn’t read at this time AJ was seen as bright, a reader, & excited to be a part of the transformation

6 Old Hickory 13 yrs. old- Joined the SC militia during the Revolutionary war Captured & ordered to clean the boots of a British officer Refused & was punished Older brother died in the Revolutionary war AJ & other brother taken to a military prison Got smallpox & brother died Mother died & AJ became an orphan Learned to take care of himself

7 Old Hickory An explosive temper, fighter, & have a good time Learned from his mistakes Fun to be around & ppl. were attracted to him Smart & honest Tried to be a teacher-Didn’t work out Studied law & became a lawyer Age 21- Chosen to be the attorney gen. of region later to be TN Age 30- Owned 2 large plantations near Nashville

9 Old Hickory John Quincy Adams (JQA) didn’t like Andrew Jackson (AJ) “A barbarian & savage who can scarcely spell is own name” AJ became a popular president Tall, lean, bright blue eyes, & thick hair Nickname- “Old Hickory”- he was a strong as a hickory tree His wife Rachel died b4 the inauguration

Washington’s reception Men wore white gloves & spoke softly Some thought Jackson & friends would be the end of the US Ppl. thought mobs would take over & life would be bad A lot of ppl. thought he made the presidency stronger Jackson had good manners He charmed ppl., even enemies Chief Justice John Marshall swore in Jackson
