SPEECHES: NOTECARDS 101 April 29 th

Today’s Objective: I will begin drafting my speech notecards.

Basic Requirements:  No more than 5 words/pictures/numbers per notecard – public speaking will require for you to memorize most of your speech; the notecards will help you to stay organized and in sequential order  Only use one side of the notecard  Number your notecards in upper corner  Write large enough to see it from arm-length away  Notecards should make sense to you, not necessarily the teacher or someone else  Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice………

Q4 Summative Speech Requirements: 100 points  3-5 Minutes  Argument about a topic of your choice with a Call to Action/Solution  Call to Action or Solution (Vision)  Ethos, Logos, and Pathos based evidence  5 Rhetorical Devices Repetition Allusion Rhetorical Questions Metaphor Imagery

5 Rhetorical Devices 1. Metaphor: An implied or hidden comparison between two things or objects that are poles apart from each other but have some characteristics common between them; compares two or more items without using “like” or “as”.  He drowned in a sea of grief.  Time is a thief 2. Repetition – the repetition of a word or phrase in a sentence, verse, or paragraph. 3. Allusion – is a reference to a well-known person, place, thing, or event. 4. Rhetorical Questions – a question asked solely to produce an effect or to make a statement, not to elicit a reply. 5. Imagery – Creating a mental image using sensory details.

Structure of a Speech  Hook  Grab your audiences attention  Introduce your Topic  Define/Explain your topic  Where does it occur? (focus location) National Issue? Colorado Issue? COS Issue? Palmer Issue?  Opposition  Explain Each Argument in order of strong, weakest, strongest  Ethos/Logos/Pathos Evidence to support your reason and explanations (why is this important? )  Conclusion  What is the solution that you would like to see?  Your Vision for the future of your Topic.

1. Develop the flow of your speech. You should make sure that you're happy with your content and facts, and ensure that ideas connect logically. 2. Practice and Time your speech to make sure that it isn't too long or too short. 3. Be clear as to what your main points and subtopics are. 4. Write main idea in slightly larger print, and place supporting ideas and facts in short bullet points below. 5. Write transitional words and phrases that will help you to progress smoothly between main ideas. 6. Use highlighter to color-code the information on each card. Choose a color combination that makes sense for you. For example, you can highlight main ideas in one color, important facts in another color, and transitional words and phrases in a third color. Note Card Tips

PVLEGS  P = Poise  V = Voice (Inflection)  L = Live (Passion / Interest in Topic)  E = Eye Contact  G = Gestures  S = Speed

Hints for Your Speech Note Cards  Add pictures as reminders  Examples:  To remind you to Smile:  To remind you to Make Eye Contact:  Don’t write it out because you might accidentally SAY IT!

Things to Remember:  Practice speech using notecards, not the outline.  Don’t read from the notecards – you should have eye-contact with your audience 95% of the time.
