9 Compound Sentences A compound sentence is two simple sentences with related ideas joined with a comma and a conjunction such as and, but, and or. Maggie was very tired, but she wanted to stay up for the party. Her cousins were visiting, and they were all older than her.

10 Complex Sentences A complex sentence is a simple sentence combined with a group of words that can not stand alone. It is joined with words such as if, because, as, or when. If she stays up too late, she will be tired tomorrow. I know this, because it has happened to me.

11 Sentence Fragments A sentence fragment is an incomplete sentence. Words need to be added to make the fragment a complete sentence. Locked the door. This is a fragment because it is a predicate without a subject. Who locked the door? The giant sea turtle. This fragment has a subject but no predicate. What did the turtle do?

12 Complete Sentences Erin locked the door. A subject was added to make the fragment into a complete sentence. We now know who locked the door. The giant sea turtle lay its eggs in the sand. A predicate was added to the fragment to make it a complete sentence. We know know what the turtle did.
