2 Nationalism  A deep devotion to the interests and culture of one’s nation  Produced competition between European nations  Ethnic groups competed as well  National borders did not always coincide with ethnic borders  Russians protected the Serbs  Serbia was part of Austria-Hungary  Russia and A-H were rivals

3 Militarism  Development of armed forces and their use as a tool of diplomacy  Germany had a strong military system  Had been a major land power  Decided to become a major sea power as well  This bothered Great Britain  A naval arms race began

4 Allies  Great Britain, France, and Russia  Triple Entente  This system of protection began in 1907

5 Central Powers  Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy  The Ottoman’s later joined up with C.P.

6 Let’s Get It On!  The war began in the Balkans  Issues between A-H, Russia, and Ottoman Empire caused tensions  June 1914  Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated  Heir to the A-H throne  Killed by a member of the “Black Hand’”  Serbian nationalist group

8 Treaties are the Downfall  A-H began to fight Serbians  Russia began to fight for the Serbs  Alliance system kicked in bringing G.B. and France into the war

9 Germany  Germans invade Belgium  Plan was to get to Paris  Defeat the French and then focus on the Russian Front  French were pushed back to the Thane River  Trench warfare began  Use of machine guns  No Man’s land  British lost 60,000 men in first day of First Battle of the Somme  July 1, 1916- November

10 American Neutrality  Americans favored neutrality  Didn’t see how this was an American problem  Some people felt ties to the “old country”  Some saw Germans as the bully of Europe  American ties were strongest with Allies

11 American Involvement  Allies sent to America for war supplies  Americans began to support the Allies so they could pay off war debts  Germans threatened U.S. shipping  British began to blockade German ports  Germans counter blockaded with U- Boats  “Unterseeboot”

12 Lusitania  May 1, 1915  British liner Lusitania sunk by U-Boat off of Ireland  1198 people died  12 Americans  U.S was angry  Wilson wanted neutrality  Made agreement with Germans to stop sinking passenger ships

13 Sussex  March 1916  French liner Sussex sunk by Germans

14 1916 Pres. Election  Woodrow Wilson vs. Charles Evans Hughes  Wilson’s campaign slogan  “He kept us out of the war”  Wilson won

15 Zimmermann Note  Telegram from German Foreign Minister to German Ambassador in Mexico  Proposed idea that Mexico would join up with Germany and Germany would support return of land in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona  Intercepted by the British  4 unarmed merchant vessels sank by Germans  Revolution in Russia was starting  Pulled Russians away from the war
